Amazon testing parcelAmazon.com will be testing the delivery of parcels using small drones in the U.K. in a deal with the government that will allow it to try out new modes of operation such as beyond line of sight... flights. The online retailer, which announced in December 2013 that it planned to use drones for the delivery of parcels, has been stymied by regulations in the U.S., where its futuristic Prime Air delivery system has yet to take off. How Google Street View letsTechnology is changing the way we connect with our family and friends, so it only makes sense that it would also change how we remember them — something Google Street View is facilitating in... surprising new ways.  In recent years, more and more users of Street View have been harnessing the power of the service's time shift feature, which allows you to move backward and forward in time to sometimes catch loved ones as they were captured by Google's Street View cameras.  SEE ALSO: Google Street View to Map Out 400,000 Graves at Arlington Cemetery Google's street mapping tool offers images of a wide range of locations dating all the way back to 2007. Because of that, some users are taking nearly decade-long trips back in time and discovering images of deceased members of their families as...

AMD packs 1TB SSD into a GPUAMD for the first time is placing a solid-state drive in a new graphics card in an effort to squeeze every ounce of horsepower out of GPUs for better virtual reality and gaming experiences. The idea... is simple: As file sizes get larger, more memory and storage are needed for GPUs to quickly process and deliver graphics. The Radeon Pro Solid State Graphics (SSG) card will have a 1TB SSD, which can be used as storage or as a supplement to on-board volatile memory. AMD's graphics cards top out at 32GB of memory, which limits the processing of large amounts of data. The SSD will add a terabyte of memory, allowing larger chunks of data to be lined up for processing on the GPU. It could also be used to store processed graphics or video for delivery to screens.

Google Maps Gets Cleaner LookGoogle Maps developers yesterday introduced some visual changes and subtle navigation aids for both desktop and iOS that aim to make it easier for users to explore the world around them. The most... immediately obvious visual changes include the removal of road outlines to make traffic and transit routes easier to delineate, as well as clearer typography for street names, points of interest, transit stations, and so on, making them more distinguishable. Another, less obvious but significant change is the way Google Maps represents high density areas of interest - restaurants, bars, shops, and so on - which now appear as orange shaded hotspots on the map. As the video above demonstrates, zooming into an orange area brings more details into focus, allowing users to tap them for more...

When it comes to collecting props, Star Wars fans don't like to settle for anything less than the most screen-accurate items possible. For the older films, when lightsabers, blasters, and ships were... cobbled together with found parts and ingenuity, that meant tracking down the original items and handcrafting perfect replicas at incredible cost. When it comes to The Force Awakens, those collectors can go right to the source: Propshop. The UK-based company actually made the items featured in J.J. Abrams' film: Rey's lightsaber, Kylo Ren's helmet, Chewbacca's bowcaster; they were behind every one. Earlier this year they announced a program where -- for a high-end price -- customers can order officially licensed replicas built using the...

Adobe launches Lightroom for Apple TV

The Verge - 26 Jul 2016 17:00
Adobe is launching Lightroom on the Apple TV today, giving photographers an easy way to display their edited photos up on a big screen. That's really all this app is: a photo viewer. Any photo in... Lightroom that you've synced to mobile or Lightroom's web gallery will be available inside the Apple TV app. From there, you can view them individually, start a slideshow, or stop to zoom in and pan around. There are no editing features, so Lightroom on the Apple TV is really just meant as a convenient way to display your photos. The app requires a Creative Cloud subscription and is available today.

This $100 smartwatch is powered by Android

The Verge - 26 Jul 2016 17:00
The smartwatch market may not be the next big thing as many hoped it would be, but that isn't stopping countless smaller companies from trying to take a piece of the pie. The latest effort comes from... a Chinese company called Mobvoi and is an Android-based smartwatch complete with its own proprietary software and voice assistant. The Ticwatch 2 is launching through a Kickstarter campaign today and is expected to hit retail availability in the US and Europe this fall. The starting price for backers is under $100. The Ticwatch 2 originally debuted in China earlier this year and follows the original Ticwatch that launched last year. Though it runs an Android-based operating system, the Ticwatch 2 is not an Android Wear watch. Its software...

Ever since NASA's Dawn spacecraft started snapping pictures of the dwarf planet Ceres in the Asteroid Belt in 2015, scientists have been perplexed by the space rock's relatively smooth surface; the... object should have way more impact craters than it does now. To get to the bottom of this mystery, scientists have used computer simulations to model how Ceres most likely evolved over time, showing just how many different types of craters the dwarf planet should have on its surface. Many of the craters predicted in the models have seemingly been erased, meaning that some kind of major geological activity has wiped them away.

Pickup trucks don't suck anymore

The Verge - 26 Jul 2016 16:34
This is The Harper Spin, a weekly column from seasoned auto critic Jason H. Harper. He's raced at Le Mans, crushed a car in a 50-ton tank, and now, he's bringing his unique style to The Verge. You do... not care about pickup trucks. A pickup is a petrol-powered wheelbarrow; surely one of the lower rungs on the automotive hierarchy. Pickups? Driven and obsessed over by people who are decidedly not you. Right? Except, well, there was that time that you needed to move your queen mattress to the new apartment, and you called up that guy who used to date your cousin, and he showed up in his lifted Ford F-150 with the Hella lights on the roof and he hoisted that mattress into the bed like it was nothing. You stepped onto the...

I shall sleep for science! Such was my proclamation and enthusiasm when I was pitched the idea of reviewing a sleep-monitoring gadget. Of all the activity trackers out there, surely the best kind is... the one that doesn't require any activity of you at all. And among them, the $129 Sense sleep tracker is rather unique in not requiring the user to wear anything extra while in bed. This system works with just a cute little sphere, barely larger than a tennis ball, positioned next to my bed and a tiny "pill" sensor attached to my pillowcase. What could possibly go wrong? Quite a lot, as it turns out. I really wanted to like the Sense sleep tracker for a number of reasons. Firstly, its creator is a young Londoner named...

As an iPhone user, I couldn'tApple's iPhone has been my main cell phone ever since just after the first model was released back in 2007. To be honest, I don't see that changing anytime soon. While it was a bit rough around the... edges in the early days, Android has grown into a refined and stable mobile platform. It also continues to be more versatile than iOS will ever be, and Android phone makers have come out with some gorgeous hardware that matches or even bests Apple's iPhones in many ways. But iOS still offers a user experience and a third-party app ecosystem that are both vastly superior to Android in my opinion, and the hardware isn't half bad either -- especially with the new and improved iPhone 7 on the horizon. That said, there are still plenty of Android features that make me jealous, and that rings...

Remix OS has been putting Android 5.1 on PCs for only half a year, but now users can upgrade their devices to Android Marshmallow. The updated OS comes a new button that resizes windows to optimize for certain apps, for instance. Ancient eye in the sky

e! Science News - 26 Jul 2016 15:34
Light from a distant galaxy can be strongly bent by the gravitational influence of a foreground galaxy. That effect is called strong gravitational lensing. Normally a single galaxy is lensed at a... time. The same foreground galaxy can - in theory - simultaneously lens multiple background galaxies. Although extremely rare, such a lens system offers a unique opportunity to probe the fundamental physics of galaxies and add to our understanding of cosmology. One such lens system has recently been discovered and the discovery was made not in an astronomer's office, but in a classroom. It has been dubbed the Eye of Horus (Fig. 1), and this ancient eye in the sky will help us understand the history of the universe.

Apple told us last quarter to expect revenue in the $41-43B range, with analysts anticipating that the company will land pretty much in the middle at $42.1B. Apple didn’t provide an estimate of earnings per share, but a Wall Street survey by Thomson Reuters forecasts the number at around $1.39 - a big drop on the $1.85 in the same quarter last year. Analysts are pessimistic about iPhone numbers and revenues … more…

The Apple goes mushy

The Loop - 26 Jul 2016 15:09
Nicholas Windsor Howard shares his thoughts on what he perceives as a decline of the OS X interface. There's a lot to process here, a reasoned, well thought out essay.Just a taste: In Apple's view, an... icon depicting a camera and a photo was too literal for an application that handles photos. Therefore, when iPhoto gave way to its replacement in 2015--Photos--the previous carefully-rendered icon gave way to this bland, meaningless rainbow abstraction. Is the move from the obvious to the minimalistically abstract a step up? A step down? Read this, decide for yourself.∞ Read this on The Loop

Diskus is the accessory everyThe irony wasn't lost on me when I realized the most annoying thing about the Apple Watch shortly after I purchased one last year. It was the charging cable. Well, the 27 minutes it took to open and... refresh any app was probably the most annoying thing, but the charging cable was a close second. The good news was the fact that the Apple Watch finally came with a charging cable that was actually long enough to reach from a wall outlet to a table, unlike any other iOS device Apple has ever released (hence the irony). The bad news was that it was a proprietary wireless charger, so it meant yet another cable to carry around while traveling. Forgetting it was all too easy, and wouldn't be long before the first time I traveled and left my Watch charger behind. Thankfully, someone finally...

Asteroid Collisions Create a Forbidden Crystal

Bad Astronomy - 26 Jul 2016 15:00
Crystals are pretty. They're also pretty interesting. They're found in nature in stunning variety, including all kinds of bizarre shapes. I find a lot of these shapes pleasing aesthetically due to... their symmetry. Some are box-shaped, some hexagonal... but they're all fascinating. Crystals get this symmetry because of the way atoms interact. They're like puzzle pieces, connecting only in certain ways. For example, carbon atoms can bond to each other to form sheets that are a single atom thick, but contain zillions of carbon atoms interconnected as hexagons. We call this graphene. But they can also connect to form tetrahedrons, four-faced triangular pyramids. The property of that crystal is very different, so we give it a different name: diamond. Over the years crystallographers have found...

Becoming TV is hard! Twitter has a new business strategy -- become TV -- and on Tuesday, when the company reports Q2 earnings, it will have a chance to pitch that new business strategy to its most... vocal and important critic: Wall Street. For the past month or so, Twitter has been scooping up digital streaming rights from anyone who will hand them over -- that includes deals with the NBA, Bloomberg, CBS and MLB Advanced Media, just to name a few. Astronomers find new, ancientLight from a distant galaxy can be strongly bent by the gravitational influence of a foreground galaxy. That effect is called strong gravitational lensing. Normally a single galaxy is lensed at a... time. The same foreground galaxy can - in theory - simultaneously lens multiple background galaxies. The reason Ofcom is suggesting a separation is due to concerns from service providers in the UK that Openreach is working in its parent company's interests, something which it's hoped this legal separation could help alleviate. It's believed a negotiation process will proceed, but with both...

Google spruced up its Maps app on Android and iOS yesterday, as well as its web counterpart, in a bid to make it easier to understand. The updated Google Maps has removed road outlines and changed... typography, alterations that Google says make it easier for users to see traffic information and make out points of interest, train stations, and other key spots easily. The company is also taking advantage of this cleaner look to highlight new areas of interest, shading districts with a lot of stuff to see and do in orange, and allowing users to explore their contents. These areas of interest are determined algorithmically, using an automated process to pick out areas with the most stores, restaurants, or bars, but Google says it's also using...

We just managed to to nab it with binoculars for the first time during the current... apparition this past Sunday from the rooftop of our Air BnB in Casablanca, Morocco. Microsoft is investigating widespread reports of battery issues with its line of Surface Pro 3 devices. Reports of Surface Pro 3 battery drain originated back in May, and some users are now reporting... that their devices only last up to an hour after a full charge. It's not clear exactly what's causing the issues, but most Surface Pro 3 users who are experiencing the problems have SIMPLO batteries installed in their devices. Microsoft used SIMPLO and LG to manufacture batteries for the Surface Pro 3, and it appears that the SIMPLO ones are affected by capacity issues. "We are aware of some customers reporting a scenario with their Surface Pro 3 batteries in which the system is reporting lower battery capacity than expected," says a...

Poll shows just how addictiveCanada's Global News commissioned an Ipsos poll to find out just how pervasive Pokémon Go has become since its debut earlier this month, and as you'd expect, three out of ten players agreed that it... was "taking over their lives." The study found that nearly 30% of Canadian users (out of 1,100 users participating in the poll) were skipping their day-to-day activities to catch pokémon. There are some positives to playing Pokémon Go. Unlike other mobile games, Niantic's AR title encourages you to explore your neighborhood in your quest to find new pokémon. Prisma: Blank notificationIf you're seeing an empty Prisma notification that you can't swipe away, you're not alone. Fortunately there's an easy fix. As Prisma for Android becomes more popular, a handful of bugs in the... AI-enabled photo app are starting to emerge. One of the most confusing glitches has to do with an empty notification that'll show up in your notification after using the app. On most versions of Android it's not obvious which app is creating the notification, and it can't be dismissed normally, so it'll just sit there -- pretty frustrating. Fortunately there's an easy fix. Why Prisma is showing an empty notification? It's not entirely clear, but it's likely the notification has something to do with Prisma trying to process photos in the background. The app does all its heavy lifting in the cloud of...
