Mysterious Fireball SpottedA mysterious fireball that was spotted moving across the night sky and breaking apart above the Rocky Mountains earlier this month left observers totally baffled. Some speculated that the blazing... object may have been pieces from a meteor or other celestial body, but the science just didn't seem to add up. If it was indeed a meteor, it would have burned too quickly and wouldn't have been seen across such a large area, according to the American Meteor Society. So what exactly was this fiery object? Military experts say the so-called "fireball" -- which was spotted in the skies at around 10:30 p.m. MDT on Sept. 2 over Colorado and Wyoming, and possibly as far as New Mexico, South Dakota and Montana -- was likely a piece of a Russian spy satellite that fell from orbit. Charles Vick, an...

Fun Rant about Those Who Claim Apple is the Copier

The Mac Observer - 21 Sep 2014 01:27
Fun Rant about Those Who ClaimI got a tip Saturday about a new blog called Tim Cook's Id, with the subheading "what Tim Cook id is really thinking." I'm not sure if that's the case, but the inaugural rant is a beauty about those... claiming Apple is the real copier in the mobile world. It's titled, "Anyone saying Apple copied Samsung/Google with a big screen phone is a $%&# idiot," which cuts to the chase. It's also invective-filled and spewy, but it's a solid assessment of the mental gyrations necessary to come to such a conclusion. TCI takes aim at Android fans, Apple haters, Judge Lucy Koh, the U.S. Department of Justice, tech journalists, Wall Street, and Jim Cramer, and that's just for starters. Hopefully this isn't a one-off. Enjoy.

From the Editor's Desk: Waiting on perspective ...

Android Central - 21 Sep 2014 17:42
From the Editor's Desk:Here's to all the people last Friday who waited in line ... ... to take their kids to school. ... to adopt a child. ... for a long-awaited doctor appointment. ... to interview for a much-needed new... job. ... in the unemployment line. ... for a much-needed free meal ... or for a place to sleep for the night. ... flying to see loved ones. There's absolutely nothing wrong with getting excited for a new toy, or waiting in line hours and hours to get it, if that's what you want to do. It is, however, important to keep things in perspective. These are phones. And as powerful and awesome as they are -- and same goes for the jobs that come along with them -- they are still toys.

∞ iPhone 6 and 6 Plus teardowns

The Loop - 21 Sep 2014 14:14
[VIDEO] Per tradition, every major Apple product release is followed quickly by a teardown video from iFixit. I love taking things apart and fixing them myself and I am very happy with the... improvements Apple has made to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus construction, making it much easier to replace the display and battery. As you watch the video, note the use of the iSclack tool, a kind of pliers with a pair of facing suction cups designed to grab onto the front and back of the iPhone. Once you've removed the iPhone screws, you place the ISClack, press on the suction cups, squeeze the ISClack handles, the suction cups separate, and the phone gently opens. Nice design there.

An Astronaut's Guided Video Tour of Earth

Bad Astronomy - 21 Sep 2014 14:00
I love astronaut photography of Earth, especially the dizzying and psychedelic time-lapse videos. I've wondered, though, why we don't see more straight-up plain old video of the Earth as the... International Space Station passes over? Well, here you go: I love this short tour of the Earth, narrated by astronauts Mike Hopkins and Rick Mastracchio as they pass over some pretty familiar landmarks: It's fun to see places I've visited (or even lived, like Houston and San Francisco) slowly slide past the view. Of course, "slowly" is just perspective; the ISS orbits at eight kilometers per second--18,000 miles per hour! But it's also several hundred kilometers up, and distance does tend to change frame of reference. And it's not hard to see that video like this puts to rest the silly urban legend...

New submitter Wylde Stile writes with an interesting case that shows just how pervasive social networking connections have become, including in the eyes of the law. A Staten Island, NY family court... support magistrate allowed a Noel Biscoch to serve his ex-wife legal papers via Facebook. Biscoch tried to serve his ex-wife Anna Maria Antigua the old-fashioned way — in person and via postal mai — but his ex-wife had moved with no forwarding address. Why Consumers Shrug Off Lousy Battery Life

Mashable - 21 Sep 2014 05:34
Why Consumers Shrug Off LousyAt this point, pretty much every tech publication has reviewed the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus and found them to be an improvement over the last models in every way Except one: battery life. Some... reviewers, such as Geoffrey Fowler of The Wall Street Journal and Brad Molen of Engadget found the iPhone 6's battery life was worse than the iPhone 5S. (The elephantine iPhone 6 Plus did better on this score.) See also: How to Get the Most Out of Your Battery Life in iOS 8 It's not surprising that mediocre battery life has failed to torpedo the new iPhones In surveys, consumers say the attribute is a big concern when it comes to buying a phone. In practice, though, consumers have shunned phones with superior battery life — such as the LG G2. Rationalizing that middling battery performance is...

Alibaba is tightly woven into a complex fabric of personal, corporate and government organization relationships. The same can be said of information technology companies in Singapore. Apple iPhone 6: Is It the BestAfter months of waiting, we finally have Apple iPhone 6 (and its big brother, the iPhone 6 Plus). It’s the 7th or 8th edition of the iPhone (depending on how you count the 5C) and with each passing... year, the “phone” designation appears less and less on the nose. Isn’t it really the iCamera? No matter what you call it, photography stands at or near the center of the iPhone 6’s key attributes. Considering where smartphone photography began, it’s a surprising turn of events. See also: Apple iPhone 6: The Review Years ago I wrote an angry post begging consumers to stop using their puny, 1 megapixel flip phone cameras to capture precious moments. What is an APN, and how do I change it?

Android Central - 20 Sep 2014 23:01
What is an APN, and how do IHaving the right mobile network settings makes a difference Two or three years ago, any smartphone fan in the U.S. would have called you crazy if you were to predict how the telecom networks have... changed. Verizon and Sprint have phones that can run on AT&T or T-Mobile, cheap pre-paid plans give you as much or more than any of the big four for less money, and people are starting to move away from the multi-year carrier contract model. Our pals in Europe can laugh at us, but these are all new ideas on this side of the pond. Because we're swapping SIM cards (and networks) more than ever, we're exposed to the APN settings on our phones. And a lot of us have some questions. We have answers.

Tesla Falls Yet Again As Wall Street Sobers On Stock

New Oculus Rift 'Crescent Bay'Kicking off day two of the Oculus Connect virtual reality conference in Los Angeles, CA, Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe took to the stage to announce a new Crescent Bay prototype--not the consumer release... nor another developer kit, but a new internal stepping stone similar to the old Crystal Cove model. "Today it is happening. Virtual reality is here," said Iribe. "We thought about flying cars, maybe hoverboards. And virtual reality. It's finally here." First, Iribe laid out what was necessary for the consumer version of the Rift, as far as Oculus is concerned: Six degrees of freedom, 360 degree tracking, sub-millimeter accuracy, sub-20 milliseconds of latency from you moving your head to the last photon hitting your eye, persistence of less than three milliseconds, 90 hertz refresh rate, at...

Oculus has announced a new prototype called Crescent Bay, another step towards the consumer version of its virtual reality headset. "It's as big of a leap as we made from DK1 to DK2," says Oculus CEO... Brendan Iribe, referring to the first two versions of the Rift development kit. The new headset features 360-degree tracking, letting the Rift's external camera track the back of the headset as well as the front, making it easier for people to move without feeling constrained by staying in the camera's range. It's supposed to have improved weight and ergonomics -- "it is much lighter. Thank god," says Iribe. And for the first time, it includes integrated headphones. Crescent Bay was announced at the Oculus Connect developer conference in...

Why You Can't Manufacture Like Apple

Slashdot - 20 Sep 2014 19:21
HughPickens.com writes Medium reports that although many startups want to design something that mimics the fit and finish of an Apple product, it's a good way to go out of business. "What happened... when Apple wanted to CNC machine a million MacBook bodies a year? They bought 10k CNC machines to do it. How about when they wanted to laser drill holes in MacBook Pros for the sleep light but only one company made a machine that could drill those 20 m holes in aluminum? It bought the company that made the machines and took all the inventory. And that time when they needed batteries to fit into a tiny machined housing but no manufacturer was willing to make batteries so thin? Apple made their own battery cells. From scratch." Other things that Apple often does that can cause problems for a...

Colorado loves watercress, Texas loves brisket and, perhaps most surprising, Oklahoma is obsessed with the pickle. Those were the results of a recent analysis of food-related language on Twitter,... conducted by a cross-disciplinary team at the University of Arizona. Combing through 3.5 million food-hashtagged tweets pulled from Twitter's API between October 2013 and May 2014, the team identified distinctive food words for each state. Along the way, they also uncovered regional differences in the popularity of #breakfast, #brunch, #lunch, and #dinner. The midwest, apparently, is #breakfast country. As it turns out, food Twitter is a remarkably rich data source. "People are less sensitive about food," says Mihai Surdenau, an...
