Google To Release Their Own VRLast month there were reports that Google could be planning on creating their own virtual reality hardware. This was based on recent job sightings that seemed to indicate that Google was interested in... virtual reality beyond just providing schematics for a cardboard virtual reality headset, like the Google Cardboard. Now it seems that the speculation has been "confirmed", thanks to a report from the Financial Times (paywall; via Engadget) in which they revealed that their sources have told them that Google could be releasing their own VR headset later this year. The device isn't so much a competitor to the Oculus Rift, but rather it is more like an open rival to Samsung's Gear VR. This means that users will be able to use their phones to semi-power the headset, whereas devices like the...

Flash memory's densityNAND flash memory has surpassed hard disk drive (HDD) technology in areal density for the first time, according to a new report from a market research firm. During a presentation at the 2016 IEEE... International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in San Francisco last week, Micron shared data showing NAND flash has moved past HDDs in areal density, according to Coughlin Associates. At last year's ISSCC, Samsung white papers indicated that its 3D NAND flash products had reached 1.19Tbits per square inch (Tbpsi) and said in 2016 they would reach 1.69Tbpsi. This year, Micron revealed it had demonstrated areal densities in its laboratories of up to 2.77Tbpsi for its 3D NAND. That compares with the densest HDDs of about 1.3Tbpsi. Tom Coughlin, Coughlin Associates president, noted the flash...

India says yes to netIn a significant move, India's telecom regulator has banned the differential pricing for different kinds of data according to the principles of net neutrality. This implies that zero-rating... initiatives like Facebook's Free Basics platform, which offers a small set of services free of cost, will not be allowed in the country. See also: India’s telecom regulator accuses Facebook of running an 'orchestrated opinion poll' for Free Basics “Given that a majority of the population are yet to be connected to the Internet, allowing service providers to define the nature of access would be equivalent of letting TSPs (telecom service providers) shape the users’ Internet experience,” the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said in its release

The Super Bowl breaks a streaming record

The Verge - 8 Feb 2016 07:15
The Super Bowl isn't meant to be streamed, but there are a lot of people who want to stream the Super Bowl, anyway. And this year there were more than ever: CBS says the Broncos victory over the... Panthers had a "record audience" streaming the game. What does that mean in numbers? CBS won't say, for now. But here are the numbers NBC recorded when it streamed the game a year ago, and also said it broke records: 800,000 average viewers per minute, 1.3 million concurrent users, and 213 total minutes.

London Wants Google To TestLast week, we reported that the Isle of Man wanted to become the testing hub for self-driving cars, which makes sense since self-driving cars need to be tested on a variety of roads and different... conditions. Turns out that the deputy mayor for transport in London, Isabel Dedring, feels the same way. According to a report from The Guardian, Dedring claims that the city's transport chiefs have met with Google and have discussed the idea of bringing their self-driving cars to London for testing. Dedring says, "It's going to have to work in big cities, so why don't we start trialling it now? Google have said they are focused on the US, but they're starting to think about going elsewhere, so we're in active discussions." She also adds, "We met them a few weeks ago to see whether they would do...

In the "don't panic" category, the small(ish) asteroid 2013 TX68 will definitely miss the Earth when it swings by our fair world on Mar. 5, 2016. The orbital mechanics on this is pretty clear; it... certainly won't hit us. The thing is, it's not clear by how much it'll miss us, and the range is a bit uncertain: It'll pass somewhere between 17,000 to 14 million kilometers from Earth. Yeah. That's a big gray area. So what gives? TX68 is a rock roughly 100 meters across, and that's pretty small as these things go. That means that at any respectable distance from Earth it's essentially invisible; too faint to detect. We can only see it when it gets close enough to Earth to be visible to telescopes, and that window of opportunity doesn't last long. It was discovered in October 2013 when it was...

Moto 360 Sport review: OnlyI hate running. It's not just because I have bad knees and it hurts to run--I would rather lift weights and get my cardio on a recumbent bike where I can distract myself playing mobile games.... Motorola's fitness-focused version of the Moto 360 is not for me. It's for people that get their workouts on the pavement and treadmills. Facebook's Free BasicsFacebook's Free Basics service has been dealt a severe blow by India's telecommunications regulator, which ruled on Monday that telecom service providers are prohibited from charging differently for... data depending on the content or the application that the user is accessing. The move follows strong protests by civil rights groups in the country against Free Basics, which was seen by its critics as creating a "walled garden" of select free websites, including Facebook, in the name of providing uncharged Web access to the poor. The critics were also opposed to Airtel Zero, a platform launched by mobile operator Bharti Airtel so that app developers could offer so-called zero-rating apps with no data charges to customers after paying the operator a fee.

How to use Cortana withIt might feel weird to talk to your computer, but that's something you should really get over when it comes to Windows 10. Otherwise you'll miss out on all the ways Cortana, its built-in digital... assistant, can help you out: creating reminders, making calendar appointments, sending an SMS (in conjunction with a Windows 10 mobile device or Cortana for Android), and even performing chores in certain third-party apps. Yes, Cortana can be integrated with third-party apps from the Windows Store, if the feature is enabled by the developer. When it's available, it can be a magical experience that will likely have you wanting more. Here's how it works on Windows 10 for PCs--it works similarly on Windows 10 mobile devices.

Bob Dylan on tour in 1975, shown for the first time

British Journal of Photography - 8 Feb 2016 14:51
Bob Dylan on tour in 1975,It has been said that Bob Dylan – the character – predates Bob Dylan the musician. Certainly the wandering minstrel is a concept as old as Christendom, but there's more here. Dylan occupies a... unique space in the American cultural idiom: Though his lyrics are not poetry, he is undoubtedly a poet. Though he speaks constantly and articulately, he seems profoundly reticent. His ubiquity is underscored by a kind of divine absence – as though he's not really there. A silent troubadour. A walking paradox whose words cover everything and nothing. A voice of the times, or maybe a voice for every time. Little wonder perhaps, that photographic collections of Dylan are a key component to understanding his enduring appeal. And a new book of images by Ken Regan showcases that enigmatic persona...

The Internet is having a fieldIf you're the CEO of a company that claims to offer its customers one of the best, if not the best, camera experiences possible, you're bound to face the brutality of the Internet as soon as you post... one blurry photo. It's all it takes, especially if that photo is taken right after Super Bowl 50 ends when everyone's still online, enjoying the festivities. That's what Tim Cook did on Sunday night, shortly after the Broncos won the game: he took a quick picture from near the 20-yard line, showing the ongoing celebrations on the field. The photo, seen below, was out-of-focus, and the Internet had a field day with it. DON'T MISS: Elon Musk's next great idea?

Meet 'Hedgehog': EngineersYour best guess is that the landscape is as inhospitable as it gets: An irregular range of sharp boulders and loose rubble piles strewn among jagged crevasses and deep troughs of dust. But then again,... it's just a guess because no one's ever actually seen this landscape up close. Now imagine that you need to send a robot across that landscape, from a perch at the lip of a steep crater to the edge of an ice-encrusted hole 1,000 meters away. And imagine that gravity is a tiny fraction of what we have on Earth. And you can't communicate with the robot because it's 50 million miles away and circling to the far side of Mars. What would that robot need to look like?

Transcend SSD370 review:Oftentimes, "solid" is perceived a boring adjective. (Unless of course, you're talking about the ground you're standing on in a liquefaction zone. During an earthquake.) But boring or not, "solid" as... it pertains to the overall performance of Transcend's Solid State Drive 370 has me doing a happy dance. Why would a midrange drive and mundane modifier invoke such delight? Too much time spent testing TLC SSDs that slow to hard drives speeds when writing large amounts of data, that's why. When I found out that the SSD370 is available at the the same price or less than those standing-on-shaky-ground TLC newbies, my dance went up-tempo into a very energetic jig.

Tree-Labs Astro BluetoothThere's a seemingly infinite number of portable Bluetooth speakers on the market, so what makes the Astro different? Manufacturer Tree-Labs says what makes the Astro stand out from the crowd is its... ability to play music unadulterated, without a digital signal processor (DSP) in the path manipulating the music to fit the limitations of its speaker. As the manufacturer puts it, the Astro is "the only Bluetooth portable speaker to play music the way it was recorded." That's an ambitious claim for any audio product to make, much less a speaker that sells for less than $200. It's also one that's all but impossible for a reviewer to verify; it's far easier to let it wash over the transom as just so much marketing speak (which Tree-Labs seems inordinately fond of). So I'll ignore the hype and use...

Earth-like planets have Earth-like interiors

EurekAlert! - 8 Feb 2016 07:00
(Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics) Every school kid learns the basic structure of the Earth: a thin outer crust, a thick mantle, and a Mars-sized core. But is this structure universal? Will... rocky exoplanets orbiting other stars have the same three layers? New research suggests that the answer is yes -- they will have interiors very similar to Earth.

Artists design totally radTurtles don't really need shoes. Their webbed, clawed feet allow them to move around easily, regardless of terrain. Anthropomorphic turtles who battle New York City criminals using ninjutsu, on the... other hand, might want a pair of killer sneakers. That's what designers Hussain Almossawi and Quintin Williams thought, at least. So they sketched a pair of shoes specifically for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael have never been the kinds of turtles to splurge on fancy footwear; the closest they've come to wearing shoes is sporting bandages around their heels. But Almossawi and Williams think it would be hard for the crime-fighting reptiles to turn down such a fashion-forward and tech-savvy design.

One of the Worst Super Bowls Ever

Slate - 8 Feb 2016 06:31
Super Bowl 50 was a grim, joyless, maddeningly ugly football game. As far as I was concerned, it was over in the first quarter, after Denver put up a quick 10 points; only three teams in Super Bowl... history have overcome a 10-point deficit to win the game, and it was clear early on that the Carolina Panthers weren't going to be the fourth. In the end, Denver won by the comfortable score of 24-10.

LG K4 Possibly Spotted InLast month, LG sort of made the LG K4 official. They also announced that they would be selling the device in markets such as Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia. According to a recent sighting, it seems that the LG K4 was spotted in Verizon's database. The handset's name was not mentioned, but its model number the LGK120AR was spotted. For those wondering how this is connected, in December, the LG K120 was spotted at the FCC where it measured 66.7 x 131.9mm. The LG K4's specs are identical. This has led to the conclusion that the LG K120 is the LG K4, and the the LGK120AR might simply be a LG K4 variant for Verizon. Now we have to admit it does seem like...

This Beef Meatball Was Grown In A Lab

Ubergizmo - 8 Feb 2016 02:27
Meat is murder! Or does it have to be? A company called Memphis Meats has recently created a beef meatball that has been grown in a lab, meaning that no animals were harmed in the making of the dish.... And no, we're not talking about fake meat made from soy/tofu that are sometimes used in vegetarian dishes, this is real meat. Memphis Meats co-founder Uma Valeti came up with the idea when he used to be a cardiologist, where he pondered about a world where we would have meats that were actually healthy and beneficial. “What if we could grow meat to be protein packed and lean, and only have the fats in there that are beneficial for us?" he asked himself, which led to this project. How does this work? Basically it follows the same concept as stem cell research for human tissue, except with...

Alleged Samsung Galaxy A9 ProTowards the end of 2015, Samsung launched the latest handset that is part of their Galaxy A-series. This came in the form of the Samsung Galaxy A9, but could there be a variant of the phone in the... works? There very well could be, thanks to a recent sighting on GFXBench (via GSMArena) that revealed a possible variation of the handset. According to the sighting, it reveals the Galaxy A9 Pro whose model number is SM-A9100. Considering that the Galaxy A9 is SM-A9000, we suppose A9100 would signify some kind of upgrade/variation. Interestingly enough, the "Pro" version of the phone has turned out to be smaller than the regular A9. If the benchmarks are correct, the Pro version will sport a 5.5-inch Full HD display, versus the Galaxy A9 which has a 6-inch display. We're not sure how this would...

The "Rascal" was never a great name for an electric scooter designed to be a slow, excruciatingly safe means of transport for the mobility-challenged. But this mobility scooter here, you see... well,... I have no idea whether it's an actual Rascal brand product, but it's definitely a rascal. Two British mechanics recently set out to break the record for "fastest mobility scooter" (because of course there's a record for that), and they managed to set the mark at 107.6 miles per hour using a bright green pocket rocket. To be fair, it only vaguely resembles the kind of scooter you might find Grandpa riding -- the only thing that's true to the original product is the outer shell. Underneath, there's a 600cc Suzuki motorcycle engine attached to...

10 most exciting Super BowlIn just about an hour, Super Bowl 50 will kick off as the Denver Broncos will attempt to pull off a major upset by defeating the rolling and seemingly unstoppable Carolina Panthers. DON'T MISS: This must be the sketchiest iPhone 7 rumor we've seen yet Of course, it's the close games that make the Super Bowl the compelling spectacle that it is. While blowouts are enjoyable for fans of the winning team, nothing quite captures
