Roger Federer needs only 90MELBOURNE, Australia -- With stone-cold confidence reminiscent of his vintage days, Roger Federer dominated? Tomas Berdych?under the lights of Rod Laver Arena to move on to the fourth round of the... Australian Open. The match, a brisk 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 win Friday by Federer, lasted only 90 minutes, the fifth-shortest full-term encounter of the men's tournament. This one came surprisingly easy for the 17th-ranked Swiss, who last season injured his knee a day after the semifinals. He broke Berdych four times and won an astounding 95 percent of his first-serve deliveries, a career best at a major. Just as revealing: Federer never faced a break point in the match. Although he won his first his first two matches here in a relatively stress-free manner, this one against the No. 10 Berdych promised to...

Foes no more, but James andCLEVELAND -- A year ago this week, there was a big game in San Antonio. The Cleveland Cavaliers were riding an eight-game win streak into San Antonio, where the Spurs had won 10 in a row and were... unbeaten on their home floor for the season. Two hours before the game with the sound systems and scoreboard being checked, LeBron James and Tim Duncan worked silently at opposite ends of the floor. James, headphones in his ears, worked up a sweat while polishing some post moves. Duncan, eyes in that famous thousand-yard stare, worked on bank shots and free throws. They didn't speak to each other, they may not have even looked at each other -- both just silently went about their business. The two have six MVPs, six Finals MVPs and eight championships between them. They earned these awards in part...

Carmelo Anthony 'committed' toBOSTON -- Sounding as if he is over the entire situation with Phil Jackson, Carmelo Anthony said he is "tired" of having to constantly answer questions about where he might stand with the New York... Knicks'?president. Talking to reporters for the first time since his meeting with Jackson, Anthony didn't go into much detail about what was said between the two. "The conversation wasn't that long," Anthony said at the Knicks' morning shootaround in Boston. "We didn't break bread. We didn't have an hour's conversation. It was a short conversation. Asked whether he has grown weary of answering questions on the topic, Anthony said, "You get tired of it. I have to face you all every day. I'm the one that's got to have all the answers. I'm the one that's got to kind of make up something. Even when I...

Allonzo Trier eligible toArizona?sophomore guard Allonzo Trier has been ruled eligible to return immediately by the NCAA after his most recent drug test came up negative, the Wildcats announced Friday. Trier will be available... to play against UCLA?on Saturday. Trier has yet to play this season, and his status was limbo after he tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug during the preseason. The NCAA performed a random drug test on Trier in September, according to sources, and the school was informed in early October that he had failed it. Trier was suspended but appealed the decision. He won the appeal, but the NCAA prohibited him from playing until the drug was completely out of his system. He has been allowed to practice and travel with the team. "I have never knowingly taken a banned substance," Trier...

This is beatuiful The Philadelphia 76ers have something special going on and it's not the fact they have won three games in a row or that they are 8-2 in their last 10 games. It's the fact their fans... are leading a movement on Twitter called #RaiseTheCat each time the Sixers win. Sixers twitter member @GipperGrove started the movement and it's as easy and great as it sounds. Sixers win, raise your cat. The @Sixers WIN! #RaiseTheCat -- dennis (@GipperGrove) January 14, 2017 The idea behind the movement comes from fans seeing Ben Simmons post pictures of his cats and fans wanting to do the same. It should be noted that Ben Simmons also has two really freaking cool cats. A photo posted by Ben Simmons (@bensimmons) on Jan 9, 2017 at 8:44pm PST for those asking they are F2 Savannahs A photo...

This is so awesome! Making one halfcourt shot is impressive for most people. Not for 11-year-old Asher Lucas. Instead, he made not one, not two, but three halfcourt shots. Oh, and he did it... consecutively, in front of a huge crowd. The shots are great, but the reactions may be even better. Some of the crowd let out a mild cheer after the first one. The crowd really started to take notice after the second make. Then, when the third shot hit, the Tar Heel crowd reacted like it was a game-winner against Duke. No word on whether Roy Williams has offered him a scholarship after this display. (Via @jadamlucas)

The globalization of basketball isn't just an NBA thing, as anyone who closely follows college basketball will tell you. Of the 351 Division I teams in this country, the vast majority have at least... one player who was born outside the United States, and several schools have made overseas their main recruiting ground in an effort to fill out their rosters. Saint Mary's and its 15-2 record is due in great part to a high prevalence of Australians. Seven Gaels, including three of their top five scorers, are from Down Under. More and more players are coming from Africa, Asia and South America, as well as from north of the border in Canada. However, Europe remains the top breeding ground for such non-American players and quite a few are excelling this season. To put a spotlight on the best Euros...

Saturday night at The Forum in Inglewood, California, a legend will make his walk one last time, while another will return to make it for the first time in three years at Bellator 170. Tito Ortiz, he... of the flaming shorts, bleached blonde hair and wild run as one of the UFC's first true superstars, will call it a career regardless of the outcome on Spike TV. Chael Sonnen, he of the big opportunities generated by his even bigger mouth, will make his Bellator debut and fight outside the UFC for the first time since 2008. In its own way, for better or worse, the lead-up to the bout has been memorable. Sonnen mocked Ortiz for having his car repossessed; Ortiz crushed a juice box on national television in a bizarre analogy representative of Sonnen's past dabbling in performance-enhancing drugs....

Serena Williams' quest for Grand Slam No. 23 took another step in the right direction Saturday afternoon when she dispatched the unseeded Nicole Gibbs 6-1, 6-3in third-round play at the Australian... Open. The second-seeded Williams is now 2-0 lifetime against Gibbs and has won all six sets she's played so far in Melbourne. Matched up against the heavily favored Williams, Gibbs came out swinging and took chances as she attempted to apply pressure with powerful crosscourt forehands. That strategy, however, shouldn't have come as a surprise since she acknowledged she didn't have much to lose, according to theNew York Times' Ben Rothenberg: Gibbs did her best to fight fire with fire, but Williams' power proved to be overwhelming before long. The 22-time major champion flashed tremendous force...

The NFL fined Houston Texans defensive end Jadeveon Clowney$18,231 on Friday for unnecessary roughness against New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in his team's 34-16 AFC Divisional Round loss... last Saturday, according to theHouston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson and Fox 26's Mark Berman. While Clowney hit Brady on several occasions, the hit that drew the financial slap on the wrist came early in the fourth quarter, when the officials flagged him for roughing the passer, according to NFL Network'sIan Rapoport. However, that hit wasn't Clowney's most memorable. The South Carolina product dragged down the quarterback late after a third-quarter pass, which provoked New England's signal-caller to complain to the officials. Brady's visible displeasure with the no-call caused former Baltimore...

Gus Bradley hired as Chargers'The Los Angeles Chargers have agreed to terms on a contract with Gus Bradley to be their defensive coordinator, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Bradley, who was fired as Jacksonville Jaguars coach... in December with two games left in his fourth season, was a hot commodity as a defensive coordinator candidate. He also drew interest from the Washington Redskins and San Francisco 49ers Bradley interviewed with the Chargers earlier this week and the team remained hopeful that he would eventually accept their offer.
