Jah-Wren Ryel writes "In early-2013, independent security researcher, Evan 'treefort' Booth, began working to answer one simple question: Can common items sold in airports after the security screening... be used to build lethal weapons? As it turns out, even a marginally 'MacGyver-esque' attacker can breeze through terminal gift shops, restaurants, magazine stands and duty-free shops to find everything needed to wage war on an airplane." We mentioned Evan's work several months back; now his not-just-a-thought-experiment exploration of improvised weapons has been cleaned up and organized, so you don't have to watch his (fascinating) talks to experience the wonders of the Chucks of Liberty (video) or the Fragguccino (video).

What do you do if you’re faced with increasing labor costs and a shortage of workers? If you’re one Chinese province, you invest in workers that never demand raises and are willing to work around... the clock. Over the next five years, authorities in the eastern province of Zhejiang, a manufacturing hub, will invest some 500 billion yuan ($82 billion) to help 5,000 companies per year swap humans for machines, China Daily reports. Labor costs have been rising almost 16% annually in the province, and switching over to machines could trim the need for 700,000 jobs, according to the Zhejiang Economic and Information Commission. Of course, robot producers are quick to point out that using their products doesn’t necessarily mean job cuts. “Replacing workers with robots in dangerous and...

Android dominates tabletIt’s not exactly news that Android has taken over the bulk of the smart device market, but in Q3 2013, Android appears to have claimed yet another title from Apple: The most revenue from tablet... sales in a quarter. Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty calculated that Android tablets were generating more revenue than iPads based on IDC’s numbers from October, which showed very little year-over-year growth for iPads and a major loss in Apple’s worldwide tablet market share. “For the first time, Android devices accounted for a greater share of the market in revenue terms than iOS,” wrote Huberty in a note to her clients. “Android revenue share reached 46.2% in 3Q13, for the first time exceeding iPad share of 45.6%.

Chinese Communist Party pushesIt's no secret that the Chinese government isn't a proponent of a free and open internet, but for some it appears that the Great Firewall doesn't go far enough. The Wall Street Journal reports that... the Chinese Communist Party released a call for additional reforms today, citing social networks and mobile messaging apps as areas of particular concern. "Following the increasing power of online media, Internet media and industry management has lagged far behind the quick changes that have come with its development," a translated version of the statement warns, noting that the technologies have the ability to quickly spread information and can mobilize citizens. Accusing current practices of having "low effectiveness," the statement goes on...

'Oceanhorn' is a 'Zelda' gameNintendo may not want to bring its franchises to mobile platforms, but that doesn't mean other developers won't try to fill that niche. In fact, every inch of the recently released Oceanhorn is... inspired by The Legend of Zelda. It features a similar structure, gives you many of the same items to use, and has you collecting pieces of heart and master keys. It even cribs the sailing from Wind Waker to let you traverse its world. Oceanhorn is basically a Zelda title crammed onto an iOS device. The problem is that it just isn't any fun. While Oceanhorn takes much of its gameplay from Zelda, it features none of the design polish or ingenuity you'll find in Nintendo's games. The best example of this is the game's dungeons. Instead of forcing...

New FCC chairman Tom WheelerTom Wheeler (pictured right) at his nomination. There are few jobs in the US government with more power to help or harm the country's tech landscape than the chairmanship of the Federal Communications... Commission, the agency that ultimately decides how telecoms and cable companies go about their business. And Tom Wheeler starts his five-year stint at the helm of the FCC under a fair amount of scrutiny: a former lobbyist for both the cable and wireless industries, it's easy to extrapolate that the President Obama-nominated venture capitalist might not have the best interest of consumers in mind. But are the fears unfounded?

lpress writes "Department of Education officials, led by Under Secretary of Education Martha Kanter, were on our campus last week, soliciting input on The President's College Value and Affordability... plan. The discussion focused primarily on the design of a system for rating colleges and to a lesser extent on innovation and improvement. While the feedback was constructive, many attendees pointed out difficulties and limitations of any college rating system. One solution is to open the process by having the Department of Education gather and post data and provide a platform and tools for all interested parties to analyze, visualize and discuss it. Similarly, open innovation should be encouraged, for example, by providing a hosted version of the open source education platform MOOC.ORG."

Adobe's colossal password leakAdobe's been embarrassed over the past few weeks after it was revealed that some 150 million customer records were leaked online — and that Adobe had been using some questionable methods to protect... that information in the first place. In a clever spin, some of that information has been turned into a playable crossword puzzle that helps remind people just how insecure common password choices can be. The collection of 10 crossword puzzles use the most common 1,000 passwords found in the leak as its answers, with up to 50 user-supplied clues serving as the questions. Top 10 Tech This Week

The New App a Secret Agent Would Love

The Huffington Post - 16 Nov 2013 20:48
A few minutes before his helicopter touched down in a covert military base just outside of Kabul, Afghanistan, Tommy Thompson reached for his secret weapon. He was about to meet with top Afghan... officials and he needed to ensure he hit his mark. But Thompson's mission to the war-torn region in 2004 did not involve delivering guns and bombs. As the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, the diplomat was there to win hearts and minds. To accomplish his directive, assigned to him by the President of the United States, Thompson relied upon information delivered at exactly the right time and place. Minutes before each meeting with dignitaries, he was handed a top-secret intelligence briefing. The CIA-prepared binder contained the most vital, and at times trivial, information on who the...

What Pirating Taught Me About Life

Luckily I grew up in the military and... attended the Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DoDDS, not to be confused with DDoS), so I had access to computers at both home and school. I got really good with them. My dad had this pixelated strip poker game back in the day. He didn't want me playing it, so he'd keep it hidden in his closet. When I got home from school, I'd find the floppy disk, navigate through DOS to load it, and play strip poker for a couple hours on our computer. As I got older, I eventually got my own computer and went to college while dial-up internet was becoming widespread. The Evolution of Pirating... It was...

Is Apple About Fashion or Technology?

The Huffington Post - 16 Nov 2013 20:35
I think it is only appropriate that the words Apple and fashion are used in the same sentence. Apple is a consumer electronics company, with innovative technology embedded in the ethos of the company.... Fashion is somewhat of a style thing, you know, usually associated with today's clothing designers. So, why are both of these distinctly unconnected words used in the same sentence? Well, after reading an article called As Apple Edges Closer to Fashion, Questions Arise, I came to the conclusion that Apple has taken design thinking and design innovation privileges to an entirely new level, far beyond what companies could have imagined. It's no surprise that both design thinking and design innovation can be tied to fashion and tech. Here's what John Maeda has to say. Design has always been...

Like last year's conference, this year's Wired: Data | Life conference had its own share of "oohs" and "aahs" - like MC10's biostamp, a smart sensor as thin as a band-aid or Theranos' blood testing kit that requires just a droplet of blood to run a full complement of lab tests. But, it is the data collected by these devices, apps and even in person at a doctor's office or pharmacy, that provide the biggest opportunity to alter how, when and where we test, diagnose and manage our health. For decades,...

Hands-on with Tablo, a DVRMany streaming-savvy DVRs either lean heavily on cloud services or are linked to traditional TV -- neither of which is ideal for cord cutters trying to lower their long-term costs. Nuvyyo is promising... what could be a more affordable option with its upcoming Tablo DVR. The upcoming, partly crowdfunded set-top box streams both live and locally recorded over-the-air broadcasts to seemingly any internet-capable platform, including Android, iOS, Roku players and web browsers. In theory, it's as cheap and convenient as internet-only video while delivering the wider content selection of traditional TV. We've had hands-on time with a Tablo prototype that suggests the company has at least latched on to a good (if imperfect) idea --

Gillmor Gang: Daft Monopolists

TechCrunch - 16 Nov 2013 20:00
Gillmor Gang: Daft MonopolistsThe Gillmor Gang -- John Taschek, Keith Teare, Kevin Marks, and Steve Gillmor -- act their age in the style of Steve Ballmer, who thinks he's of an older time where the world's not going. I'm not so... sure he's right about that, what with SnapChat taking a pass on $3 billion ephemeral oh-so-direct messages. Surely the snark social leader fits like a glove with the younger set, but at its core the underlying motives are straight out of Game of Thrones.

Reports of bricked PlayStationAfter its launch on Friday, the PlayStation 4 has come under fire from some gamers who say their units have been dead on arrival. The most troubling reports describe a so-called "blue light of death"... syndrome, in which the console's light bar flashes blue but never outputs a video signal or boots up. Reddit's PlayStation hub has collected 91 separate incidents of console failure, but it's unclear how widespread the problem truly is. None of the Manhattan-based stores contacted by The Verge had seen any PS4 returns based on the issues.

It's funny how quickly we get used to ergonomic paradigms. What I mean is, we quickly got used to a smartphone's On/Off button being on the top or right side with the volume button on the left side.... Lord help the handset maker who screws with this time-honored six-year old smartphone button arrangement. Well, Lord help LG, because it has moved all these keys from their usual perimeter positions to the rear of its latest superphone, the G2. In an age of Android androgyny, this shift is jarringly deliberate, designed to clearly differentiate the G2 from other Android superphones, specifically those from LG's mortal enemy, Samsung and its Galaxy S4.

Lucas123 writes "Google just announced it is investing another $80 million in six new solar power plants in California and Arizona, bringing its total investment in renewable energy to more than $1... billion. The new plants are expected to generate 160MW of electricity, enough to power 17,000 typical U.S. homes. They are expected to be operational by early 2014. With the new plants, Google's renewable power facilities will be able to generate a total of 2 billion watts (gigawatts) of energy, enough to power 500,000 homes or all of the public elementary schools in New York, Oregon, and Wyoming for one year, it said. Currently, Google gets about 20% of its power from renewable energy, but it has set a goal of achieving 100% renewable energy."

Roundtable: Pebble Smartwatch

Android Central - 16 Nov 2013 19:19
Roundtable: Pebble SmartwatchI hadn't been a watch-wearer for years. I'm still not convinced I'm one now -- strapping a timepiece onto your wrist doesn't feel particularly 21st Century -- but here I am, with a Pebble proudly... displayed on my arm. And I'm not alone. Myself, Jerry, Andrew -- Pebble wearers, all. It certainly took long enough, right? Pebble has been the darling of the "crowdfunding" world since it launched its $100,000 campaign on Kickstarter on April 11, 2012 -- and walked away with more than $10.2 million in backers' money just 37 days later. Fast forward more than a year and watches finally started shipping to those who pledged. In August 2013, Pebble found itself on sale at Best Buy. Now? It's safe to say the Pebble made it, albeit in a limited fashion. Samsung has since come into the game with the...

The Nexus 5 vs. the Moto X

Android Central - 16 Nov 2013 19:07
The Nexus 5 vs. the Moto XGoogle's two smartphone divisions offer a very different take on 'stock' Android We love Android phones. That means we have a few of them laying around, and when a hot new one like the Nexus 5 comes... out, we can take our time and compare our favorites against it. You've seen how we think the G2 from LG and HTC's One match up to Google's new Nexus, and now it's time for my take on how the Moto X fares against the mighty Nexus. It's worth mentioning that I almost didn't write this. I'm pretty impressed with the Moto X and phones that can't duplicate it's features aren't going to win my heart. But in the end, since I've been using a Moto X every minute of every day since they became available, it fell on my shoulders. I'm also a huge Nexus fan, so I think we can keep things fair.  That being...

Stratfor hacker sentenced

Stratfor hacker sentencedJeremy Hammond, the man responsible for the 2011 attack on Strategic Forecasting Inc., better known as Stratfor, pled guilty to his role in the attack and was sentenced on Friday to serve ten years in... federal prison. However, Hammond's supporters maintain that his sentencing, indeed the case itself, was unbalanced and rife with problems from the beginning. In 2011, the AntiSec movement was resurrected in name. Those supporting AntiSec used its name to target governments, law enforcement, and the private businesses that associated with them. One such business was Strategic Forecasting Inc., better known as Stratfor, a firm in Austin, Texas that provides "geopolitical intelligence" to individuals and organizations across the globe. Scenarios like this one are becoming more and more common as location tech gains a foothold in retail: You’ve just tossed a jar of peanut butter in your grocery cart when your smartphone buzzes. You... glance down at the screen to see a message that seems downright clairvoyant: Buy some jelly. Get $1 off. Convenient? Certainly. Creepy? Maybe. In September, Apple introduced the iBeacon. But retailers are exploring many other options for indoor positioning and tracking, including low-power Bluetooth (used by the iBeacon and others), videocameras, sound waves, and magnetic fields. The goal is to enhance the brick and mortar experience to rival that of online retailers. The technology could eventually give retailers capabilities rivaling those of online stores. On the Web, behavioral ads use...

There's been a lot of coverage on the Apple Samsung patent retrial. This article does a good job of boiling down both the numbers and the arguments being put forth by each side. Samsung's expert's key... argument: An expert hired by Apple had determined the company was due $114 million in lost profits because of Samsung's use of technology under Apple's patent No. 7,844,915, also known as "pinch to zoom." The '915 patent covers technology that can distinguish whether a user is scrolling with one finger versus using several touch points at once for a pinch-to-zoom action. However, Michael Wagner, an accountant and lawyer hired by Samsung, said there's no evidence from either company that shows consumers bought Samsung devices because they liked that particular touch-screen feature. This is some incredible compelling analysis. I would urge anyone interested in the methodology behind PC/tablet/phone market share "reporting" (and I do use that term loosely) to read this... top-to-bottom. Things start off with a bit of history. Following a routine that began in the 1990s, Gartner and IDC spent the 2000s noting that Apple's Mac market share was virtually irrelevant, afloat in an ocean of PC sales without giving much regard to the fact that Apple enjoyed very high share in some market segments (such as education and graphic design) and essentially none in others (such as enterprise sales, kiosks and cash registers). Then came the iPod, then the iPhone, then the iPad, with Mac sales rising as the Mac-iOS ecosystem evolved and expanded. And that's when this article really gets...

mdsolar writes with this excerpt from Bloomberg News: "Arizona will permit the state's largest utility to charge a monthly fee to customers who install photovoltaic panels on their roofs, in a closely... watched hearing that drew about 1,000 protesters and may threaten the surging residential solar market. The Arizona Corporation Commission, which regulates utilities in the state, agreed in a 3-to-2 vote at a meeting [Thursday] in Phoenix that Arizona Public Service Co. may collect about $4.90 a month from customers with solar systems. Arizona Public is required to buy solar power from customers with rooftop panels, and the commission agreed with its argument that the policy unfairly shifts some of the utility's costs to people without panels. Android vs. iOS Development: Fight!

TechCrunch - 16 Nov 2013 16:00
Android vs. iOS Development:The eternal startup question "Android or iOS first?" grows ever thornier, with news that Android's market share exceeds 80%. But never mind the managers and non-technical founders: what do developers!... developers! think of that divide? Whoever makes life easier for them gains a sizable edge. And by "them" I mean "us." When not writing TC columns (and novels) I'm a software engineer for HappyFunCorp, a consultancy with the best name (and web site -- go on, click through) ever. theodp writes "In June, Google unveiled Project Loon to acclaim from the press for its "moonshot" project that aims to use high-altitude balloons to cheaply provide internet connectivity to rural,... remote, and underserved areas of the developing world. So it's interesting to see that a just-published Google patent application for Balloon Clumping to Provide Bandwidth Requested in Advance, which pre-dated the Loon launch by a year, paints a not entirely altruistic picture of balloon-powered Internet access technology. Google describes the invention — which had been kept secret with a non-publication request — as just the ticket for those well-to-do enough to pay a tiered-pricing premium to get faster internet access while attending concerts, conferences, air shows, music festivals, and...

Bad Astronomy - 16 Nov 2013 15:00
Colorado is rich in wildlife. I've seen a bit of it out on hikes and such; moose, elk, coyotes, the odd fox and hare. I've also seen some bald eagles, but usually they're pretty far away. Sometimes... far enough that's it's hard to tell if they're eagles or not; a hawk with its feathers catching the sunlight masquerades well as an eagle to my inexperienced birding eye. But then, sometimes, they're close enough that the distinction isn't so hard to make. Driving home from the airport last week I saw this pair sitting on a power pole. They were obvious even from hundreds of meters away. I see a lot of hawks on these poles, imperiously gazing over their territory, eyes sharp for rodents or other potential snacks. An eagle is clearly different; larger, with that vividly white-feathered head. I...

Caturday: Let sleeping catsYuki is a beautiful 2-year-old white cat whose name, appropriately enough, means "snow" in Japanese. Her human companion Glenn Smith often needs to get work done on this iMac, but Yuki has other... ideas: I always look forward to the Caturday pictures on the weekend and thought it is time that I share my precious feline with your readers. This is a photo of my 2 year old cat Yuki (which means snow in Japanese). Generally when I try working on our iMac she will sit in front of the screen, walk around the computer, chase the mouse pointer on screen, rub her whiskas on the side of the iMac and sit on the keyboard. There are times when I have to make font sizes larger so I can see around her when she doesn't want to move out of the way. She just cannot bear to be alone! All very familiar...

Despite recent successes in the field, creating a quantum computer is really hard. For one thing quantum bits in a super positioned state (or qubits, the basic unit of data for quantum computing) have... a hard time surviving at room temperature. Typically, these superposition states last for only a few seconds, but in a recent experiment at Oxford University, researchers were able to keep a quantum system alive for a full 39 minutes. "These lifetimes are at least ten times longer than those measured in previous experiments," explained Stephanie Simmons from the university's Department of Materials. "Having such robust, as well as long-lived, qubits could prove very helpful for anyone trying to build a quantum computer." Even so, they aren't particularly active ones - all of the qubits in the...

An anonymous reader writes "From the guy who brought you CD syncing and the original music locker (both of which saw lawsuits from record labels) comes the latest invention to rock the music world: a... real-time radio search engine. 1000s of worldwide stations are indexed in real-time and users can search and play most any popular artist — even the digital holdouts (Tool, Led Zeppelin, etc) that are unavailable on paid services like Spotify. A bunch of Twitter's alpha and beta testers for Android might have fired up their apps today, and thought they'd been kicked out of the program. After all, the social network recently scrapped the new... design it debuted to intrepid early adopters in September and brought its older look back. The familiar buttons take their place on top of the app again, replacing the menu that allowed testers to swipe their way from one stream to another. Twitter took elements from both designs, though, so it isn't a complete throwback to the old interface. Alpha users, in particular, see an entirely different Discover section that features a basic list view and a detailed view that shows sample tweets. Also, the prompt that pops up when you post a tweet comes with a note that reads "Are you in [city,...

Sidecar said Friday it was... doing away with donations and instead introducing minimum fares. The changes apply only in California and take effect Friday on iOS and Android devices. Video game sales show signs ofThanks to a few huge fall releases, video game sales managed to improve year-over-year once again in October, according to the latest numbers sent to us by the NDP Group. This makes for the third... month of positive growth for the industry, an estimated $1.3 billion in total consumer spending that signifies a 5% jump over October 2012. The Nintendo 3DS led the hardware segment for the sixth consecutive month, in part due to 2DS sales, although overall hardware sales were down 8% from last year. With the launch of the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One this month, hardware sales should see a major surge in November, but for now, Nintendo still has the best-selling console on the market.

Forget Advertising: Twitter's Data Has Huge Potential

The Huffington Post - 16 Nov 2013 04:51
Twitter's IPO was a resounding success, with the stock jumping up more than 72 percent the day it debuted. The company was valued at $18.1 billion, an astounding figure that suggests Wall Street sees... huge potential despite its $300 million in losses over the past three years. While advertising far and away makes up the majority of Twitter's revenue, various commentators have noted some obstacles in its way: falling ad rates by as much as 70 percent for mobile, a smaller user base than Facebook and user churn. While ads may be Twitter's bread and butter at the end of the day, the micro-blogging site needs to focus on expanding other revenue streams, especially data monetization. In 2012, Twitter earned $47.5 million from data licensing, a bit more than 13 percent of overall revenues of $350...

New Website Lets You Track Sharks Around Maui

The Huffington Post - 16 Nov 2013 04:04

Valley Isle seems to many visitors more terrifying than it is relaxing. Now, just in time for the holiday tourist season, a new website aims to calm the nerves of would-be water enthusiasts. The data comes from satellite transmitters on the dorsal fins of seven tiger sharks which were tagged last month by a University of Hawaii research team. Snapchat rumored to haveSnapchat must be very, very confident in itself because it’s apparently been turning down multibillion-dollar buyout offers left and right. Unnamed sources tell Valleywag that after Snapchat turned... down Facebook’s $3 billion offer, Google swooped in with its own $4 billion offer that the company similarly turned down. Valleywag’s sources say that Snapchat has decided to wait until next year to raise cash because it wants to grow the number of photos its users share every day to more than the number of photos shared on Facebook every day. If that happens, the company expects its value to go through the roof, at which point $4 billion will look like chump change.

Earlier this week, the folks at the Make-a-Wish Foundation's San Francisco branch called me about a crazy scheme they were cooking up for a boy named Miles, who has leukemia. Because he loved Batman,... they were going to drive him around the city in a borrowed Lamborghini with Batman decals, and had arranged some set pieces, such as a damsel in distress in a cable car, for Miles to participate in. At that point, some 7,000 strangers had signed up on the Make-a-Wish website to provide the necessary flash mobs — a crowd in Union Square to alert Miles to the dastardly Penguin's schemes, and another outside City Hall to thank him for saving 'Gotham.' The organizers figured they would be lucky if half those people showed up

Google Play Music App Finally Comes to iOS

Mac Life - 16 Nov 2013 02:50
It's a good year to be a music lover. Earlier this year Apple gave us iTunes Radio as a worthy alternative to popular services like Pandora and Spotify, and today Google finally released its native... Google Play Music app for iOS. Whereas Apple's design for iTunes Radio seems to mimic Pandora; Google Play takes a tack that's more reminiscent of Spotify, but with the welcome option to add all the music files from your computer and play them in the Cloud. Prior to today's release, Mac users could already have all that via browser access, but the native iOS app allows for greater quality and (from what I can tell) greater responsiveness. Under the free plan, you can upload as many as 20,000 songs for free, in addition to creating playlists that you can share with friends. As long as you have...

Samsung's Galaxy GearOut of the box, one of the Samsung Galaxy Gear's major failings was its lackluster notifications system. IBM Faces a Crisis in the Cloud

Mashable - 16 Nov 2013 02:01
IBM is having an identity crisis, and it sure is something to watch. You may have heard about Big Blue’s recent ad campaign that takes a dig at Amazon.com. In its marketing material, IBM claims to... power 270,000 more websites than Amazon, via its cloud computing service. It’s a flimsy jab at Amazon because IBM has been a major laggard in the cloud rental market, having bought its way into the business in July with its acquisition of SoftLayer Technologies. Far from being a cloud pioneer, IBM has spent most of the past few years downplaying services such as Amazon’s as insecure, low-margin businesses of little interest to a serious computing company. “You can’t just take a credit card and swipe it and be on our cloud,” IBM executive Ric Telford told Businessweek in early 2011....

The... Killing will see a fourth and final six-episode season (when is still up in the air), produced by Fox, which Netflix will stream exclusively in the areas where it provides service. This, along with continued hints of more Arrested Development in the works will probably get fans of other canceled/about-to-be canceled series excited, although we'll have to wait and see how many refurb projects Netflix is ready to put next to its original content.

Notegraphy Review

Mac Life - 16 Nov 2013 01:26
There are lots of ways to quickly create compelling works of art on our iPhones and iPads. One-touch filters and easy overlays have turned us all into amateur graphic artists, even if we don't have... the most artistic of eyes. Notegraphy is cut from that cloth. With an emphasis on social sharing, the app automatically stylizes everything you write with a keen artistic flourish, turning your most mundane thoughts into stunning inspirational displays. Notegraphy's creation process is one of the best we've seen. The interface is gorgeous, with a light feel that fits the iOS 7 style without sacrificing its own character. Starting a new note sends you directly to a blank page with a retractable keyboard and a clever gesture for adding new pages -- just tap the right corner and swipe to the left....

'The Killing' Revived By"The Killing" has been revived. Again. A final six-episode season is coming to Netflix. The show lasted for two seasons on AMC before getting canceled. Then, it was revived for a third season, only to... be canceled -- again -- by AMC. The show's third season was brought about by a deal between the studio and Netflix, but Season 4 will solely live on Netflix. Series stars Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman will return. "The rich, serialized storytelling in 'The Killing' thrives on Netflix, and we believe that it is only fitting to give Sarah Linden and Stephen Holder a proper send off," Cindy Holland, vice president of original content for Netflix, said in a statement. "We are looking forward to offering fans -- both existing and new -- a series that we know is perfectly suited for on-demand...

LG G Flex appears on the FCCThose on our side of the pond who've been lusting after LG's intriguingly flexible handset might've seethed with jealousy after finding out it's heading to Asia and Europe later this year. Thankfully,... the US will get its very own version of the LG G Flex as well, if this FCC filing is any indication. The document reveals a LG D959 -- the G Flex's model number -- with LTE band 17, a sure sign that the phone is headed to the Ma Bell network. Other tidbits gleaned from the listing suggest that the G Flex also has quad-band GSM support, 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and GPS, most of which we already knew. At last, it seems that we'll be that much closer to seeing how LG's bendy smartphone compares to its curvy competitor.

Phil Schiller takes the standApple executive Phil Schiller took the stand on Thursday as the Apple/Samsung re-trial on damages entered its third day. As a quick refresher, this sole purpose of this particular trial is to... determine just how much in damages Samsung owes to Apple for infringing upon Apple's design and utility patents. Schiller took the stand late on Thursday, giving Apple's marketing chief just enough time to introduce himself and touch on just how important and risky the iPhone was when Apple began working on it. Nokia's Tablet Gambit WillNokia's Lumia 2520 tablet will set you back $500 if you want to buy it flat out. AT&T is more than happy to sell you one at that price. Pick it up with a wireless contract, and AT&T will knock $100... off that sticker. But pick up a Lumia 925, 1020, or 1520 at the same time, and the price of the Lumia 2520 drops to $200. That's an incredible decline in cost. I confirmed with AT&T that the phone itself would be subsidized, but subject "to a second agreement," or contract, so the deal only works if you are ready to pony up for two devices and requisite plans.

Let's Talk About Whatever YouHappy Friday, internet dwellers. The week has wound down, Batkid has saved the day, and all that's left is to go home and curl up around your new iPad Mini's warm glow. There's still some minutes left... in the day, though, so what better way to cap off a helluva week than a good ol' fashioned open thread? Talk about whatever you'd like! For instance, I was just discussing books with a certain Gizmodo employee--more specifically, the fact that, despite what he may think, physical books are in no way obsolete and, in fact, fulfill a very necessary function.

Steve Ballmer says he couldn'tSteve Ballmer's announcement that he would retire from Microsoft came as something of a surprise, and left many wondering whether his eventual exit is voluntary. Thanks to an interview with the... outgoing CEO at the Wall Street Journal, we now know that it is -- although it's coming after intense pressure. Ballmer explains that the company board of directors has been pushing him to speed up Microsoft's transformation into a devices and services company ever since January. By May, he decided that his own way of thinking was slowing down the transition; he was the "pattern" that had to break. New leadership might reshape the company at a faster pace, Ballmer says. While the success of his strategy will depend heavily on just who takes the reins next year, it's clear that the chief executive is...

Miles and his parents teamed up with the Make-A-Wish... Foundation and a slew of volunteers including the San Francisco Police Department and the City of San Francisco to save Gotham City--er, San Francisco--on Friday. Ballmer wasn't fired fromIn a candid interview with the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said that he was encouraged to hustle his transformation plan into motion, but ended up being pushed out the... door. Microsoft director John Thompson told the paper that the board "didn't push Steve to step down," he said. "but we were pushing him damn hard to go faster." And that process, Ballmer revealed, ended with Ballmer concluding (or being forced to conclude) that someone else should lead Microsoft into a new era of computing. In August, Ballmer officially said that he would step down within the next twelve months, as the board set out to find a replacement. Microsoft's board approved of Ballmer's "One Microsoft" reorganization plan. He just didn't move it along fast enough. "At the end of the...

Now that the extent of the U.S. National Security Agency's surveillance programs has been exposed by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, it's beholden on the public to fight back or else find... themselves "complicit" in the activities, according to Massachusetts Institute of Technology linguistics professor and philosopher Noam Chomsky. The freedoms U.S. citizens have "weren't granted by gifts from above," Chomsky said during a panel discussion Friday at MIT. "They were won by popular struggle." While U.S. officials have long cited national security as a rationale for domestic surveillance programs, that same argument has been used by the "most monstrous systems" in history, such as the Stasi secret police in the former East Germany, Chomsky said. "The difference with the totalitarian...

Which makes sense: Like the wildly popular music service, it also provides you with an endless, effortless... stream of content, which it selects by monitoring both your listening habits and those of other people with similar tastes. But Swell isn’t a Pandora competitor: The stuff it plays is spoken-word news, information and talk, including shows from broadcast networks as well as podcasts produced for the web. How Stores Track Their Shoppers

Popular Science - 15 Nov 2013 23:30
'Til You Drop Robinsons Place Manila, Philippines Ninjakeg, CC BY-SA 3.0 You've seen it happen. One day, you're aspirationally browsing performance outerwear online; the next day, you're seeing ads... for Primaloft and Gore-Tex on every website you visit. That's the power of tracking people while they're shopping--even if they don't buy anything--and brick-and-mortar stores want to get in on that action, too. They just need a way to record where their customers go, the way websites do. MIT Technology Review recently took a look at progress in indoor tracking. Watching where people go inside buildings, where GPS can't yet reach, is a little more challenging than keeping tabs on people outdoors or online. Nevertheless, MIT Technology Review names a few U.S. stores that have tried the...

Peripheral Vision 012: Dave"I'm pretty well known as one of the co-founders of the British post-punk band, Gang of Four," Dave Allen begins. "And then, after a while, I got the web itch." It's a study in contrasts, perhaps,... from the bass player of one of the late-70s most seminal political punk bands, to a title like "director, interactive strategy," but Allen is nothing if not eclectic. Over the decades, his passions have taken him from the angular post-punk of Gang of Four to the new wave of Shriekback, through stints with Intel and E-music. And now we're here in 2013, inside North, a Portland brand agency that has imparted on him the aforementioned title. To Allen, however, it's not all that strange, the transition from punk rock to advertising. And at the very least, it adheres to tenets he's held dear all...

The Case For Sony's PlayStation 4

ReadWrite - 15 Nov 2013 23:19
The Case For Sony'sThe Playstation 4, Sony's cutting edge slab of next-gen gaming, splashed onto the scene Friday, delighting the early adopter set and leaving the rest of us with a tough call to make. I love a hardware... launch as much as the next rabid early adopter, but when it comes to an investment with this kind of heft, observing the console wars from a safe distance before casting a vote with your credit card is invariably the wisest choice of all. You've read the tech specs and heard the hype. Now here's the case for buying the PS4. PS4: A Next Generation Role-Reversal If this was an election, Sony and Microsoft would be bonafide flip-floppers. Rather than toeing the party line of their forebears, the company's respective consoles have essentially switched places this generation. See also: The Road...

Are You a Giver or a Taker? Some people say success and happiness come from being in the right place at the right time. I think it's more about the right person finding himself or herself in the right place. During my more than... 15 years in the tech industry, I've seen really qualified, outstanding individuals suffer miserably or burnout in their jobs. At the same time I've seen people with less talent and lower principles rise quickly in their corporate ranks. If you watch this from afar with no real consideration to the context of where and how these individuals worked, you might think there's truth to that saying, "nice guys finish last." It wasn't until I came across Adam Grant's book, Give and Take: A Revolutionary Approach to Success, that I realized it wasn't about being nice or cutthroat. It's about who you...

Ballmer reflects on time withGive outgoing Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer credit: He seems to be very in touch with who he really is. In a lengthy interview with The Wall Street Journal, Ballmer said that he decided to step down... from Microsoft because he wasn’t moving fast enough to get the company’s mobile products up to speed with Apple and Google. What’s more, Ballmer’s talks with Ford CEO Alan Mulally made him seriously rethink the way that he’d been running Microsoft during his tenure, which caused him to put more of an effort on teamwork and less on competitive pressure between divisions. “I’ll remake my whole playbook, I’ll remake my whole brand,” Ballmer explained. From the production of tougher, more durable smart phones and other electronic devices, to a wider variety of longer lasting biomedical implants, bulk metallic glasses are poised to be mainstay... materials for the 21st Century. Phil Schiller in SamsungIn front of a courtroom jury this morning, Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller claimed that Samsung's patent infringement has weakened "the view that the world has for Apple." By copying the company's... marquee iPhone and iPad products, Samsung has effectively diluted Apple's brand, Schiller argued. That's made it difficult for Cupertino's products to stand out, in turn leading consumers to "question our innovation and design skills in a way that people never used to," Schiller said. "As this [infringement] has been occurring, it's harder for us to get new customers and bring them into our ecosystem." Schiller recalled the first time he saw a Galaxy smartphone, saying, "It looked exactly like the iPhone, so much so that people might...

Shh! Skype may filter outFor anyone who has participated on a well-attended conference call, it's a familiar problem: the tap-Tap-TAP of some anonymous participant, typing notes. Fortunately, a future version of Skype may... silence the offending fingers. The Next Web reports that Microsoft held a press conference in Stockholm, Sweden, this week, where Microsoft executives suggested that they might adapt a similar typing-quashing technology from the company's Lync software. The technology apparently "listens" for the sound of typing, then filters it out automatically, at least within Lync. As The Next Web notes, Google has implemented a similar, but heavy-handed solution: its Hangouts automatically detect the typing sound, mute the offender, then quietly send a private note to him or her asking them to mute their...

Cloud adoption carries bigCorporations love the cloud. It's easy, it's everywhere, and it keeps costs down. In fact, recent surveys of information technology professionals by 451 Research, Forrester Research, and the Society... for Information Management all suggest they like it so much that they're willing to behave in very dangerous ways to use it. The 451 survey tells us that CIOs worry about security. The Forrester one suggests that despite these worries, more and more of these companies are taking part in risky cloud behavior. And the SIM one reveals that executives controlling the IT purse strings just don't care. The problem with the cloud, or at least the problem with the public version of the cloud, is that it's not secure. Robots: a Working Breed At the Dairy
