operator_error notes a report that ownCloud developer Lukas Reschke has emailed the Ubuntu Devel mailing list to request that ownCloud (server) be removed from the Ubuntu repositories because it... contains "multiple critical security bugs for which no fixes have been backported," through which an attacker could "gain complete control [of] the web server process." This is the future of iTunes

BGR - 25 Oct 2014 03:00
This is the future of iTunesIt’s been a few months since Apple acquired Beats Electronics, but the merging of products and services has only just begun. One of the first questions many of us asked when the acquisition was... announced was what would happen to the relatively new Beats Music streaming service. Apple hasn’t provided an answer yet, but The Wall Street Journal is the latest publication to report that Beats Music will eventually merge with Apple’s own music service. “Apple is rebuilding Beats Music and plans to relaunch it next year as part of iTunes, according to a person familiar with the matter,” reports the Journal. This was the expected follow-up to a report from last month which claimed that Beats Music would be shutting

The New York Times reported that Eustace, 57, ascended to the edge of space in a balloon filled with 35,000 cubic feet of helium from an airport in Roswell, New Mexico. He then cut loose using a small explosive device and plummeted towards Earth at speeds of up to 822 miles per hour. Fifteen minutes later, he landed safely on the ground.

SmartAboutThings writes Microsoft has recently published its Q1 fiscal 2015 earnings report, disclosing that it has made $4.5 billion in net income on $23.20 billion in revenue. According to the... report, revenue has increased by $4.67 billion, compared to $18.53 billion from the same period last year. However, net income has decreased 14 percent compared to last year's $5.24 billion mainly because of the $1.14 billion cost associated with the integration and restructuring expenses related to the Nokia acquisition. But what's finally good news for the company is that the Surface gross margin was positive this quarter, which means the company finally starts making money on Surface sales. New submitter o_ferguson writes As Slashdot reported earlier this week, a lone shooter attacked the war memorial and parliament buildings in Ottawa, Canada on Wednesday. As many comments predicted,... the national government has seized this as an opportunity to roll out considerable new regressive legislation, including measures designed to* increase data access for domestic intelligence services, institute a new form of extra-judicial detention, and, perhaps most troubling, criminalize some forms of religious and political speech online. As an example of the type of speech that could, in future, be grounds for prosecution, the article mentions that the killer's website featured "a black ISIS flag and rejoiced that 'disbelievers' will be consigned to the fires of Hell for eternity." An anonymous reader writes: Cristophe de Dinechin, long-time software developer, has an interesting article on the processes involved in building the major browsers. From the article: "Mozilla... Firefox, Chromium (the open-source variant of Chrome) and WebKit (the basis for Safari) are all great examples of open-source software. The Qt project has a simple webkit-based web browser in their examples. So that's at least four different open-source web browsers to choose from. But what does it take to actually build them? The TL;DR answer is that these are complex pieces of software, each of them with rather idiosyncratic build systems, and that you should consider 100GB of disk space to build all the browsers, a few hours of download, and be prepared to learn lots of new, rather specific...

Twitpic has reached its final chapter. The once-popular image sharing service announced today that it has reached an agreement to be acquired by Twitter, saving millions of photos that were set to go... up in smoke later today. In a blog post, founder Noah Everett said "we have reached an agreement with Twitter to give them the Twitpic domain and photo archive, thus keeping the photos and links alive for the time being." He added, "Twitter shares our goal of protecting our users and this data." The service was one of the first and, ultimately, most popular ways to share photos on Twitter. FCC Postpones Spectrum Auction Until 2016

Slashdot - 25 Oct 2014 20:52

That got pushed back to 2015 in December, and now the... Federal Communications Commission has bumped it to 2016 in the face of a lawsuit from the National Association of Broadcasters. The FCC says the legal briefs aren't even due until January 2015, and it will take them until the middle of the year to review the documents and respond in court. An anonymous reader writes: The 28 nations in the European Union agreed Friday to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40% (going by 1990 levels) by the year 2030. The deal received widespread criticism;... industry bosses said the 2030 targets were too extreme, while many environmental groups said the goals weren't ambitious enough. The deal requires each nation to achieve the goal independently — earlier targets could use international offsets to avoid or reduce action. EU officials hope the agreement will encourage the U.S. and China to take a more aggressive stance on fighting climate change.

Why Social Media Guidance Is Important

The Huffington Post - 25 Oct 2014 19:46
Why Social Media Guidance IsSocial media web sites have become a global information network that undoubtedly has many benefits. However, with this increased exposure, it is vital to make sure our students are wise and remain... safe as they post information online. It is best to advise students not to post information about themselves online that they would not want the whole world to know. This is especially important when students are applying to college. Negative or inappropriate posts may be seen by admission officers and affect an admissions decision. Students must realize that many people may see their posts including teachers, employers, and college admission officers. Some college admission representatives (and employers), will research students online to see if there is data available to help make an admission...

There's a lot of hype around Apple Pay right now, but not everyone is on board with the new mobile payments system. In fact, a significant number of merchants, including heavyweights like Walmart,... Kmart, 7-Eleven, and Best Buy, are in outright competition with Apple Pay. The retailers, through a joint venture formed in 2012, are building their own mobile payment app, called CurrentC. High Speed Evolution

Slashdot - 25 Oct 2014 18:46
Taco Cowboy writes: Normally, the term "evolution" implicitly refers to super-long time frames. However, in the case of lizards on Florida islands, evolution seems to have shifted into a higher gear.... Researchers have documented noticeable changes in a native species over a period of just 15 years, after an invading species altered their behavior (abstract). "After contact with the invasive species, the native lizards began perching higher in trees, and, generation after generation, their feet evolved to become better at gripping the thinner, smoother branches found higher up. The change occurred at an astonishing pace: Within a few months, native lizards had begun shifting to higher perches, and over the course of 15 years and 20 generations, their toe pads had become larger, with more...

Alongside its plans emblazoned with imagery from Jackson's films, the airline also produced a Hobbit-themed air safety video in 2012 to go along with the first Hobbit film. Until Dawn brings hokey teenI only jumped once. Honestly, just once while I played through a demo of Until Dawn, the first major title from developer Supermassive Games. Until Dawn is less psychological thriller and more... schlocky horror, but there isn’t nearly enough of that on the home consoles. Alien: Isolation, The Evil Within, Daylight — there are plenty of survival horror games that take themselves seriously, some more effectively than others. It’s about time we had a wacky offshoot. The short demo that I played during a recent PlayStation event in New York left me intrigued. Until Dawn is a PS4 exclusive third-person adventure game, putting the player in control of one of the unfortunate teens that ended up in a rundown, haunted hotel. As

CVS Stores ReportedlyEarlier this week, pharmacy chain Rite Aid shut down unofficial support for the Apple Pay and Google Wallet mobile payments systems, resulting in an outcry from users who have been testing out Apple's... new system since its launch on Monday. Rite Aid was not an official Apple Pay partner, but the payments system generally works with existing near field communications (NFC) payment terminals anyway, and many users had had success using Apple Pay at Rite Aid stores early in the week. It now appears that fellow major pharmacy chain CVS is following suit and as of today is shutting down the NFC functionality of its payment terminals entirely, a move presumably intended to thwart Apple Pay. Google Wallet services are obviously also being affected by the move. Multiple reports on Twitter and the...

Drones Are Now Helping FightIn a remote area of Southeast Asia, drones are fighting a battle — not against terrorists or insurgents, but against infectious disease. Researchers on the island of Borneo are using flying robots... to map out areas affected by a type of malaria parasite (Plasmodium knowlesi), which most commonly infects macaque monkeys. In recent years, public health officials in the Malaysian state of Sabah have seen a rise in the number of cases of humans infected with this deadly parasite, which is spread, via mosquitos, from macaques to people. By mapping the communities where these cases occur, researchers hope to figure out why the parasite is spreading from monkeys to people with greater frequency, said Chris Drakeley, a professor of infection and immunity at the London School of Hygiene and...

SternisheFan writes with news that medical researchers from Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital have successfully cultivated stem cells that will kill brain cancer cells in mice... without damaging healthy cells. "They used genetic engineering to make stem cells that spewed out cancer-killing toxins, but, crucially, were also able to resist the effects of the poison they were producing. ... In animal tests, the stem cells were surrounded in gel and placed at the site of the brain tumor after it had been removed. Their cancer cells then died as they had no defense against the toxins (abstract)." The next step in the research is to try the treatment on humans. Chris Mason, a professor of regenerative medicine, said, "This is a clever study, which signals the beginning of...

5 Hard Truths From the PersonResumes are very personal documents. In fact, whenever I'm reviewing a resume, I always ask permission before I mark it up. Who am I to edit your life's work? That said, I can almost guarantee you... that the way your career counselor handles your resume is not the way it will be handled once you submit your job applications. After speaking with many, many recruiters, here are some hard truths I've learned. 1. If your relevant experience, education, or skills are hard to find at a glance, your resume might as well be blank. It's understandable to want to make your resume stand out a bit from the typical resume, but getting creative in InDesign isn't the way to do it. As the head of Google's HR states, "Unless you're applying for a job such as a designer or artist, your focus should be on...

Originally, it was titled Disney's Haunted House, says Mick Garris, the... film's writer and co-executive producer, in an interview with Mashable. Molecular beacons shine light on how cells 'crawl'

e! Science News - 25 Oct 2014 10:39
Adherent cells, the kind that form the architecture of all multi-cellular organisms, are mechanically engineered with precise forces that allow them to move around and stick to things. Proteins called... integrin receptors act like little hands and feet to pull these cells across a surface or to anchor them in place. When groups of these cells are put into a petri dish with a variety of substrates they can sense the differences in the surfaces and they will "crawl" toward the stiffest one they can find.

Fall TV's First Cancelled Show Is...

Mashable - 25 Oct 2014 09:24
Fall TV's First Cancelled ShowIt turns out love was not in the air between ABC and the fall TV season's first axed show, Manhattan Love Story The network's decision to ax the show, of course, comes as no surprise See also: Go... Behind the Set of CW's 'The Flash' In just four airings, Love Story, starring former America's Next Top Model contestant Analeigh Tipton and Jake McDorman, shed nearly half of its 4.7 million premiere audience, with the most recent episode pulling an anemic 2.7 million viewers. Combine that number with a general lack of buzz for the rom-com and a sad DVR ratings boost and you have a bonafide TV bust The show shouldn't sulk, though. Someone had to be first, and four weeks into the new fall TV season, everyone was wondering when the first freshman series would fall

The technology lets residents and visitors set up a secure connection with either network and then automatically get on the other city's system whenever they enter its coverage area. It's an arrangement that makes a lot of sense between the two cities: They're both home to major tech companies and are commuting distance apart. Adding in a river halfway around the world may seem like a stretch, but for travelers, the easy access...

It's well known that Apple was a little late to the streaming music party, and thus its fantastically expensive acquisition of Beats Music and Beats Electronics makes sense for a company looking to... get ahead in the business. It'll need it, too. The Wall Street Journal reported today that traditional digital music sales on iTunes have dropped by 13 percent so far this year. Thus continues the trend from last year, when Apple's digital sales started declining for the first time as the market moved away from purchased songs and albums and more toward on-demand subscription services like Spotify, Google Play Music, and, of course, Beats Music. The Journal repeated rumors that Apple plans to rebrand the service sometime in the near future. "The plummeting download numbers help illustrate why...

For consumers, at least, the news that the new iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 would support a SIM card that could freely be switched out among AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and EE in the United Kingdom seemed... like a dream come true. Unfortunately, AT&T refuses to play along. Word surfaced at numerous sources today that anyone who connects their new iPad to an AT&T data plan will find their Apple SIM cards locked to the carrier. As Apple says on its site, "When you choose AT&T on iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3, AT&T dedicates Apple SIM to their network only." That means that if you ever want to switch to another carrier, you'll need to buy another Apple SIM card from an Apple retail store or approved partner. On the bright side, they typically cost only $10 or so. It's a low blow, no doubt, but hardly...

Vote for Bruce Something-or-Other

Slate - 25 Oct 2014 01:04
"I am beyond thrilled," Michelle Obama told a crowd in Des Moines, Iowa, earlier this month, "to be here today to support your next senator from Iowa, our friend Bruce Bailey." The problem: The man... she was stumping for is named Bruce Braley. The first lady made the same mistake six more times over the next 16 minutes. Finally, after she twice urged the audience to visit the nonexistent "vote dot brucebailey dot com," the crowd couldn't take it anymore. "Braley!" they shouted toward a stage that featured a giant purple sign prominently displaying the candidate's correct name. Obama's abashed response: "I've been traveling too much."

AT&T Locks Apple SIM Cards On New iPads

Slashdot - 25 Oct 2014 00:47

Google VP Alan Eustace LeapsThat's one giant leap! Alan Eustace, a senior vice president at Google, set a new world record today by completing the highest-altitude free fall yet--parachuting from 135,908 feet (or 25 miles) above... Earth. The record was previously held by daredevil skydiver Felix Baumgartner, who leaped from 24 miles above Earth in October 2012. To put that in perspective, scientists say you officially enter space at 73 miles above Earth's surface. That's pretty high up--and Eustace was about a third of the way there. (Story continues below) Eustace gets lifted to his peak altitude of 135,908 feet via a high-altitude ballooning system. Eustace reaches a peak speed of 822 miles per hour during his dive. Eustace lands after a 4 1/2-minute free fall, the AP reported. "It was amazing," Eustace told The New...

Passwords: Too Much and Not Enough

Slashdot - 25 Oct 2014 00:08
An anonymous reader writes: Sophos has a blog post up saying, "attempts to get users to choose passwords that will resist offline guessing, e.g., by composition policies, advice and strength meters,... must largely be judged failures." They say a password must withstand 1,000,000 guesses to survive an online attack but 100,000,000,000,000 to have any hope against an offline one. "Not only is the difference between those two numbers mind-bogglingly large, there is no middle ground." "Passwords falling between the two thresholds offer no improvement in real-world security, they're just harder to remember." System administrators "should stop worrying about getting users to create strong passwords and should focus instead on properly securing password databases and detecting leaks when they...

Why I don't believe in "cinematic" VR

PandoDaily - 25 Oct 2014 00:00
Why I don't believe in[Editor's note: This is a guest post by Armando Kirwin, a former film maker now working on the future of entertainment. The post went through PandoDaily's usual editorial process. Mr. Kirwin was not... paid for this post.] I'm not an expert on cinema. Nest acquires Revolv andSo you bought a Revolv smart hub to manage your smart home. You obviously recognized a well-designed product. The only problem now is that Nest Labs saw the same potential. The folks who designed the... world's most famous thermostat, since gobbled up by Google, have swallowed Revolv--and immediately stopped sales. I was a bit gobsmacked when I saw the Revolv smart-home hub at CES last January. With this one device and a smartphone app, you could control just about any smart system in your home. The odd-looking device could control your home lighting, your door locks, and your programmable thermostat, but it could also speak to your Sonos mutli-room audio system.

Google's Sundar Pichai, who's already responsible for overseeing Android and Chrome, is about to have even more on his plate. According to Recode, CEO Larry Page has sent a memo to employees revealing... that Pichai will now lead nearly every major product division at the company. That includes search, maps, Google+, commerce, research, plus ads and infrastructure. The senior executives previously tasked with heading up those efforts at Google will now report to Pichai instead of Page. Since YouTube is in many ways a standalone operation at this point, Pichai won't be a middleman between CEO Susan Wojcicki and Page; she'll still report directly to Google's top boss.
