'Error 53' PlaintiffsIn February, Seattle-based law firm Pfau Cochran Vertetis Amala (PCVA) brought a class action lawsuit against Apple over the "Error 53" bug, which bricked iPhone 6 models with select third-party... components. Apple quickly responded, confirming the error and issuing an updated version of iOS 9.2.1 to fix the error. Earlier this month, Apple moved to dismiss an amended version of the class action lawsuit. However, PCVA and the plaintiffs have now moved to keep the lawsuit alive, according to AppleInsider. Apple argued the lawsuit should be dismissed because the company issued a fix for the error and offered to reimburse customers who had paid to have their devices replaced or repaired. However, the plaintiffs are now arguing that Apple failed to properly alert users to the reimbursement...

Footprints of baby planets in a gas disk

Phys.org - 25 May 2016 05:00
Footprints of baby planets inA new analysis of the ALMA data for a young star HL Tauri provides yet more firm evidence of baby planets around the star. Researchers uncovered two gaps in the gas disk around HL Tauri. The locations... of these gaps in the gas match the locations of gaps in the dust found in the ALMA high resolution image taken in 2014. This discovery supports the idea that planets form in much shorter timescales than previously thought and prompts a reconsideration of alternative planet formation scenarios.

Chromebooks are beating Macs,History was made in the first quarter of 2016 as more Chromebooks were shipped in the U.S. than Macs according to market research company International Data Corporation. Sure, less-expensive, non-Mac... computers don't offer the same high-end performance that allows you to professionally edit photos and videos, but that's not what most people need in a computer. The numbers are showing that instead of dropping $900 on a laptop with a bunch of features they don't need, people are starting to lean toward the more fiscally responsible option: Chromebooks. Microsoft won PC but lost mobile, what now?

The Verge - 25 May 2016 15:13
Microsoft is bowing out of building its own phones for consumers. After dramatically scaling back its Lumia devices last year, Microsoft hammered the final nail in the coffin today with an additional... $950 million write off and 1,850 more job losses. Microsoft's Lumia devices still account for more than 95 percent of all Windows phones sold, but a lack of new devices means sales and Windows Phone market share have declined sharply over the past year. Windows Phone is dead, and phone makers aren't interested in reviving it. Where did Microsoft go wrong, and what does it do now? Microsoft's announcement today puts a lot of its mobile errors into perspective. The software giant wasted "thousands of man hours of innovation" with its...

Mossberg: Can Apple win the next tech war?

The Verge - 25 May 2016 15:00
Welcome to Mossberg, a weekly commentary and reviews column on The Verge and Recode by veteran tech journalist Walt Mossberg, now an Executive Editor at The Verge and Editor at Large of Recode.... Fifteen years ago, when the time became ripe for post-PC devices that put a premium on integrating software and hardware, Apple was the best-positioned company to lead the charge -- and it did. The company's vertical integration, its attention to detail and innovation in both software and hardware, and its willingness to make big bets, gave it an edge. And it used that edge to reel off its now-familiar string of game-changing products like the iPod, the iPhone, the MacBook Air and the iPad. Now, the iPod is essentially gone, and the other...

EU prepares to end geoblockingWhether they're delivered in parcels or in data packets, goods and services should be available to all European Union citizens wherever they live. That, in a nutshell, is the purpose of a... long-promised host of new legislative proposals unveiled by the European Commission on Wednesday as part of its plan to make the EU a "digital single market." Among the proposals is a ban on unjustified geo-blocking, or using a citizen's location as an excuse not to deliver digital services or sell them physical goods. But forcing companies to deliver without discrimination "is like putting a sticking plaster on a broken leg," according to John Higgins, director general of industry lobby group Digital Europe.

Windows Phone's guttingDown, but not out: Microsoft is laying off another 1,850 staff from its smartphone hardware business, but says it isn't leaving the market completely. Since it bought Nokia's mobile phone activities in 2013, Microsoft has been managing a business in decline. Environmental migration in Haiti a warning to the world - in photographs

Haiti is almost completely denuded of trees. First Click: I am an electronics god

The Verge - 25 May 2016 13:30
I feel like a god. Note that I used the lowercase "g" god, not uppercase. I'm not the proper noun God for crissake. I'm not a surgeon. I'm just a lowly man with a portable USB hard disk drive that I... resurrected from the trash heap. All it took was some patient Googling and YouTubing. Time I have, and I've solved enough issues in my life to know that without the hunt there can be no feast. We rarely appreciate the things that come too easily -- it's the battles won that we relish. Besides, I've grown weirdly fond of this little 1TB disk. It's the hard drive I bought after hanging out with its designer, Philippe Starck, back in 2009.

Altec Lansing Mini LifejacketI've been a fan of Altec Lansing most of my life, largely stemming from the sonority of the company's 15-inch 421A speakers that were a preferred woofer and bass guitar speaker for quite a while back... in the '60s and '70s. Whether that Altec Lansing company really has anything to do with today's entity, I can't tell you, but I do like the sound produced by its $100 Mini LifeJacket III. Rather a lot, I must say. This is a ruggedized and waterproof Bluetooth portable speaker with an IP67 rating, meaning it's impervious to dust penetration and that no harmful amount of water will enter its enclosure when submersed in water down to one meter. Fidelity Nearly all the portable Bluetooth speakers I've tested have noticeable hot or dead spots frequency-wise. Some accentuate bass, some the mid...

Microsoft is taking another almost $1 billion hit on its failed Nokia acquisition today. The software maker is "streamlining" its smartphone business, writing off $950 million and cutting 1,850 jobs.... The cuts come almost a year after Microsoft wrote off $7.6 billion and cut 7,800 jobs. Only a small number of former Nokia employees will remain at Microsoft, and the company's consumer phone making days are over. Microsoft has wasted at least $8 billion on its failed Nokia experiment, including the costs of restructuring and severance payments for thousands of employees. Microsoft originally hired 25,000 Nokia employees as part of its $7.2 billion acquisition of Nokia's phone business, but a series of layoffs over the past two years has...

Wrio Keyboard for iOS ClaimsSwiss startup Wrio has launched a new keyboard app for iOS which claims to speed up typing by between 20 and 70 percent compared to standard Qwerty layouts. The developers of Wrio say they achieved... this typing feat by throwing out the rulebook that says keys should be square, and instead adopting a honeycomb-like layout of hexagonal keys. This allows individual keys to be a little larger than usual, which reduces the incidence of mistyped characters. Users will notice there's no typical spacebar in the Wrio keyboard either. This functionality is divided into two single space keys at the centre of the layout. The delete key has been removed, and users swipe from right to left to delete a character, holding the swipe at the end to continue deleting characters. A swipe right restores deleted...

Apple is making a lot of noiseFrom localized versions of Android to offering free public Wi-Fi, Google is working hard to connect the next billion. Indian media outlets are abuzz after Tim Cook's maiden voyage to the country as... CEO of Apple. Cook launched a new iOS accelerator in Bengaluru, and a Maps facility in Hyderabad that will create 4,000 jobs. The executive certainly created a lot of headlines here, thanks to his strategically planned visits to a temple, a Bollywood gala, and a cricket match. However, there wasn't much in the way of how Apple would localize its products. We didn't get to hear if Apple would start assembling phones under the "Make in India" initiative -- which will lead to a massive influx in jobs -- and there wasn't any mention of fixing the iPhone pricing problem. Meanwhile, Google is steadily...

Gawker Media was ordered to pay $140 million in damages to Hulk Hogan -- real name Terry Gene Bollea -- in March of this year over the company's publication of the wrestler's sex tape. The case was... outlandish and caused a media frenzy, as expected from a legal battle between a man famous for ripping his shirt off and fighting on stage and a company built around combative tabloid stories. But the two sides' motivations seemed fairly simple: in Hogan's case, to seek hefty reparations for broken privacy and apparent distress, and in Gawker's, to secure the First Amendment right to share similar tapes in the public interest in the future -- and to avoid paying millions of dollars in fees and penalties.

Review: Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus

Android Central - 25 May 2016 06:02
Review: Lenovo Vibe K5 PlusThe Quick Take In a short time, Lenovo has emerged as a force to reckon within the affordable smartphone market in India. The latest one from the company, the Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus packs in quite a... punch for a budget smartphone and doesn't look bad, but you'd have to make a few trade-offs here and there. You'd be inclined to, because the price is just right. The budget segment in India is crowded, and a decent package just doesn't cut it. I spent a couple of weeks with the Vibe K5 Plus reviewing the smartphone, while simultaneously using a Huawei Honor 5X, a Redmi Note 3, and a LeEco Le 1S (yes, it's insane!) to put my experience in perspective. The Good Sharp display Brilliant audio quality Decent camera The Bad Poor battery life Back panel is prone to scratches Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus...

Like a cool business dad, the New York Times has finally decided to stop capitalizing the word "Internet." From June, the publication will be relying on lower-case letters to describe the information... superhighway, calling it just the "internet" in both its print and online iterations. The NYT is joining the Associated Press in ditching the capital-I internet this year, with both bastions of journalistic style choosing to shrink the letter on June 1st. How much can a mode-2 wave move?

e! Science News - 25 May 2016 03:53
Look out over the ocean and you might get the impression that it's a mass of water acting as a single entity. However, the world's oceans are made up of layers of different densities, called... stratifications, with complex fluid dynamics. Often bulges, called mode-2 internal waves, form in the thickness of these layers, trapping materials inside that then move along with the wave. For the first time, two mathematicians at Canada's University of Waterloo have created a 3-D simulation of the mass transport capabilities of mode-2 waves. Such models will help define how mode-2 waves can carry materials that are either beneficial (such as phytoplankton and other food sources) or detrimental (such as crude oil and other contaminants) between ecosystems.

The Gawker Media owner was convinced the Silicon Valley billionaire was out to get him. Nick Denton thought that billionaire Peter Thiel was secretly funding Hulk Hogan's lawsuit against him. For... months, the Gawker Media owner and people around him had speculated that the pro wrestler had a wealthy backer footing the legal bill for his fight against Denton and Gawker, which had published an excerpt of a Hogan sex tape. And in recent weeks, Denton had been more specific -- he believed that Thiel was the one pushing the case forward, according to people familiar with Denton's thinking. Poll: Would you prefer an OLEDMany people have been eagerly waiting for Apple to refreshed its entire MacBook Pro lineup with a thinner design, faster internals, Siri support, and more. A report yesterday said all of that is... coming later this year in Q4, but added an additional detail: an OLED touch bar above the keyboard that would replace the row of function keys. This is a new idea that hasn’t really been suggested for Apple’s MacBook Pro lineup before, but it has a variety of interesting possibilities. But with a significant change like that comes a steep, steep learning curve. The quick shortcuts we’ve all become accustomed to using throughout OS X would have an added twist, but could they potentially become easier to access in the long run? In the end, however, it would all come down to whether or not the...

HPE to spin out its hugeIn a surprise move Tuesday, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise said it would spin off its enterprise services business and merge it with CSC to create an IT services giant with U$26 billion in annual revenue.... It's the latest step by CEO Meg Whitman in her effort to turn around one of Silicon Valley's oldest companies. Just last year, Hewlett-Packard split itself into two vendors, with HPE selling data center products and services, and HP Inc. selling PCs. HPE said it expects to complete the "spin-merger" by March 2017. The combined company will be led by Mike Lawrie, CSC's chairman, president and CEO. Whitman...

Will no one save us fromWhy is T-Mobile's "Un-carrier" initiative working so well? The answer is as obvious as it seems: people don't like wireless carriers. These telecommunications giants continue to squeeze subscribers... for every last penny they can and all the while, they rake in billions upon billions of dollars each quarter. It would be one thing if a company just scraping by tacked on a tiny fee, but Verizon hauled in $7.9 billion in profit last quarter on $32.2 billion in sales while AT&T's operating income climbed to $7.1 billion on revenue totaling $40.5 billion. T-Mobile is hardly a non-profit, but the company has done a tremendous job of playing off consumers' collective disdain for carriers and it has seen tremendous growth as a result. At the same time, its model really isn't all that different from...

Asus ROG teases a massiveEither Asus's Republic of Gamers brand has access to a chip that hasn't been announced yet or it has some trick up its sleeve. That's our conclusion following the company's claims of a gaming notebook... that outperforms an Nvidia GTX Titan X. Oh, and the machine could be 24 inches, too. ROG hasn't said whether its unnamed hardware is a production machine, but implied that more will be revealed at the Computex show next week in Taiwan. "What we can say is that one of the highlights from the lab is an overclockable gaming laptop that will rival even gaming desktops," the company said in a blog post. "We were told it is a concept machine and thus they are still in the process of making it even more powerful."

Verizon admits it 'overhyped' Go90

The Verge - 25 May 2016 00:37
Verizon, in a rare moment of honest self reflection, acknowledged today that its Go90 streaming service "did get a little bit overhyped." According to FierceCable, Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam made the... remarks during a conference this morning. He added that Verizon contributed "to some extent" to setting these high expectations. It's unclear who else might be responsible for this. McAdam's comments were meant to tone down the expectations around Go90, which hasn't been the overnight success that Verizon initially indicated it was hoping for. "We didn't believe that it was going to move the needle on [Verizon's overall] $130 billion revenue stream overnight," he said, according to FierceCable. "It's one of those things you have to work...
