3D printing in cookie doughA 3D printer that layers cookie dough instead of plastic will go on sale in Asia next year and later in the U.S. and Europe pending regulatory approval. Nick Barber Cookies printed using a 3D food... printer on September 3, 2015. The Food Printer from Taiwan's XYZ Printing will cost around US$1,800. The printer works in a similar way to a traditional printer by layering dough, but what it prints isn't edible. It's printed on a piece of parchment paper and then needs to be baked in an oven before being eaten.

Driverless golf carts get testBefore you walk, you have to crawl. Similarly, before you have driverless cars, you need autonomous golf carts, according to MIT. MIT and the National Research Foundation of Singapore — together... called SMART — have collaborated on creating a self-driving golf cart, reports MIT News. The golf carts were tested at a large public garden in Singapore over a period of six days. See also: Google self-driving cars don't need windshield wipers SMART also developed an app that lets passengers book a ride at one of 10 stations on the island, rerouting vehicles to meet customer demand as needed. Unlike Google's self-driving cars, the goal with the SMART golf carts was to keep the technology as simple as possible. As such, it uses off-the-shelf laser rangefinders mounted at different heights as...

Apple Patent Wants YourLast week we reported that British scientists have outfitted an iPhone with a prototype hydrogen fuel cell battery that allowed the phone to last a week before needing charging. That is very... impressive, but could that technology be taken and applied to laptops as well? It turns out that Apple has had a similar idea. A recently discovered patent filed by Apple has revealed that the Cupertino company is exploring a fuel cell system for the MacBook. The goal? To allow the laptop to be used without the need to be plugged into power for days or even weeks on end. Safe to say that this system would allow users to bring their laptops with them even on travel without worrying about battery life. However just like the previous experiment with the iPhone, these fuel cells will need to be replenished...

Alcatel Announces GO WATCHWearable tech is all the rage these days and while Alcatel isn't necessarily a brand that comes to mind, the company is trying their hand all the same. At IFA 2015, Alcatel has officially announced... the GO WATCH smartwatch. As you can see in the image above, it does not look like your typical smartwatch. In fact upon first glance we had to make sure that we weren't looking at Casio G-SHOCK. That being said, the design is pretty obvious that Alcatel has designed the watch for active users in mind. According to the company, it will feature water, dust, and shock resistance which is good news if you plan on being a bit rough with it. This is pretty impressive given that most smartwatches these days feel almost a bit too delicate. Interestingly enough unlike a lot of smartwatch makers, Alcatel...

Based on the information, it has been suggested that come 16th of September, Android Pay will be officially launched. Alcatel OneTouch Xess TabletWhat on the street is Samsung has an 18-inch tablet in the works. Whether or not that is true remains to be seen. However it looks like Alcatel has beaten Samsung to the punch with the OneTouch Xess... tablet which they have announced at IFA 2015 which will come with a 17.3-inch display. As you can tell from the photo the Alcatel OneTouch Xess has a rather unique and obvious feature. This comes in the form of an adjustable built-in stand and handle. This will allow users to prop the tablet up to view videos or to view websites. Admittedly this does not make the tablet particularly portable (its 17.3-inch display probably doesn’t help either) but if you plan to use it at home or in the office, it should be good enough. The photos also shows the varying angles that you can lean the tablet,...

Acer's CEO Denies Merger Rumors With ASUS

Ubergizmo - 4 Sep 2015 12:36
Acer's CEO Denies MergerIn case some of you guys didn't know, ASUS and Acer and companies from Taiwan. Both companies also happen to be very established names in the computing department. So much so that there have been... rumors that Acer and ASUS would merge. However as it turns out the rumors are false. Acer's CEO Jason Chen recently refuted the rumors, claiming that by merging, both companies would violate the country's laws. To be specific, Taiwan has a law which prevents companies from merging if post-merger, they would have a 70% or higher market share. According to Chen, this is exactly what would happen if Acer and ASUS were to merge. It is possible that the rumors sprung up when last month, Acer's founder Stan Shih revealed that he was open to the company being bought over. This was by no means a...

Hisense Magic Mirror Tablet IsHisense is a brand many of you guys might not think of when it comes to mobile devices. However in the past, the company has put out several mobile products such as tablets and smartphones. This year... at IFA, the company is back with a new tablet called the Magic Mirror, and boy does it look good. This was spotted by the folks at Gizchina and as you can see in the photo above, Hisense has created a near bezel-less display. This is definitely unlike most tablets we have seen to date, which tends to focus on landscape orientation. However with the Magic Mirror, it almost feels like Hisense designed the tablet to be used in portrait orientation. According to the specs, the Magic Mirror tablet sports an 8.4-inch display with a 2560×1600 resolution, giving it a pixel density of 360ppi. Under...

Monster's selfie case is a monster fail

The Verge - 4 Sep 2015 11:56
Monster unveiled a selfie case at IFA in Berlin this morning as if it was a new product. The company actually launched it a few months ago, but that didn't stop it from claiming it was the biggest... announcement at IFA. Monster hyped up its selfie case as if it had solved some type of problem that regular selfies and selfie-sticks can't solve, but during a presentation it was nothing but a monster fail. A demo left an iPhone tumbling towards the floor as the selfie case failed to stick to a TV properly. Demo aside, I'm not sure why you'd ever want a selfie case like this. You're trusting your phone to stick to a surface where it can easily crash to the floor, just to get a selfie at a weird angle. Monster's demo proved that, and just...

WhatsApp's Monthly ActiveIt is safe to say that at the rate WhatsApp is growing and the number of active users they have, they are probably one of the world's largest messaging apps at the moment, if not the most popular. Now... back in April, it was announced that WhatsApp's monthly active users was at 800 million, but that number has grown since then. According to the latest figures, WhatsApp is now boasting a whopping 900 million monthly active users, which has grown by a staggering 100 million over the course of the past five months or so. Breaking it down, this means that WhatsApp has averaged about 20 million new active users every month! The company was acquired by Facebook back in 2014 and according to Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg, he believed that WhatsApp could hit as many as 2-3 billion users, although...

We've seen drones used for all sorts of things, like photography, videography, and rescue efforts. However one Kansas farmer by the name of Derek Klingenberg decided to use his drone for fishing. This... is actually a pretty good idea as it allows the pilot to stand along the shore, while the drone goes out into deeper waters. So did he catch any fish? Turns out that Klingenberg did and was successful in his attempt. All he had with him was a fishing line and the DJI Phantom 2 quadcopter. Based on his reaction, it would seem that Klingenberg did not expect to be successful. However we have to admit that it was a pretty sweet catch. That being said, Klingenberg is actually not the first person to catch a fish using a drone. As the folks at WIRED point out, back in 2013 there was another...

This is a TV... with a 4K resolution, which by itself is more or less to be expected from modern TVs these days. However what makes the Ambilux so unique is the fact that it comes with pico projectors embedded into the back. Now we know you're probably a little confused by the use of pico projectors, but they do serve a purpose. The idea, which you can see for yourself in the video above, is to create a more immersive experience. How it works is that the pico projectors on the back will project images on what you're watching onto the wall behind it. This will help fill up the room with more colors and images,...

A number of us here at Motherboard are major bird nerds, and why not? Birds are, to use a scientific term, extremely dope. Aves is such a varied class of creatures--from the flightless cassowary... capable of disemboweling a person with its claws, to the birds of paradise with their insane plumage and manic mating rituals. But sometimes birds are just huge goofy dorks. Nick Lund, aka The Birdist, teamed up with NPR to make a video featuring the dumbest-sounding birds of North America. For example: the American Bittern, a wading bird, sounds appropriately like a slowly-leaking faucet, while the Bald Eagle has a pipsqueaky call better suited to a songbird than a majestic bird of prey. My personal favorite is the Willow Ptarmigan, which makes a variety of dumb sounds including one that's...

Driven to Kill

Slate - 4 Sep 2015 10:48
In April a BMW racing through a fruit market in Foshan in China's Guangdong province knocked down a 2-year-old girl and rolled over her head. As the girl's grandmother shouted, "Stop! You've hit a... child!" the BMW's driver paused, then switched into reverse and backed up over the girl. The woman at the wheel drove forward once more, crushing the girl for a third time. When she finally got out from the BMW, the unlicensed driver immediately offered the horrified family a deal: "Don't say that I was driving the car," she said. "Say it was my husband. We can give you money."

ReThink Review -- Steve Jobs:Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple and the man credited with bringing both personal computers and advanced mobile electronics to the masses, died on October 5, 2011. But the battle to define both the... man and his legacy is being waged right now in the form of several books and high-profile films, the latest of which is the documentary Steve Jobs: The Man In the Machine, from Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney, a man I've interviewed in the past and whose work I greatly respect. That's why it really bums me out that The Man In the Machine makes little attempt to portray someone who was, by most accounts, a complex, iconic, but all-too-flawed man who, over the course of his career, could be both inventor and thief, monk and businessman, brat and sage, tyrant and beloved leader, and managed...

Let's start with the good; the Go Watch is compatible with both Android and iOS and, like any half-competent smartwatch, will notify you of texts, calls, emails, phone calls, and local weather. And that's pretty much it as far as functionality goes.

Alcatel wants its new 17.3-inch Xess tablet to be a multipurpose hub for the family, providing recipes in the kitchen, films in the living room, and a digital whiteboard for to-do lists and upcoming... events. However, the severely underpowered Android device doesn't seem to be capable of entertaining even a single individual, let alone a whole household. The device has a fine 1920 x 1080 display, but an unspecified 1.5 GHz processor and 2GB of RAM mean that even swiping through pages of apps becomes a chore as icons are dragged slowly across the screen. Alcatel has stressed that the Xess is still a prototype at this stage, but it's in need of some serious upgrades.

Remember when the original OnePlus was set to offer a swappable denim back cover? Well that never happened, and for all its popularity, the OnePlus left us without a truly perfect match for blue jeans... and denim jackets. But with its new Pop Star smartphone, Alcatel is answering the call to make your phone feel more like your pants. The 5-inch Android Lollipop handset isn't exactly a flagship, planting its flag instead in deep customization options. You can choose from a wide array of designs from more traditional plastic backs to leather and the aforementioned denim. Aside from its looks, the Pop Star features a 720p display, quad-core processor, and 8-megapixel camera. Again, this isn't a top-end Android phone by any definition; it's...

Watch the trailer for theIf there’s one surefire way to drum up interest in a movie or documentary, try using the court system to have the entire project scrapped. In an obvious lesson that many companies are still learning... the hard way, most efforts to prevent a film from being seen will only serve to increase awareness and overall viewership down the line. So it goes with BBC’s Grand Theft Auto docudrama dubbed The Gamechangers. Starring Daniel Radcliffe as Rockstar Games president Sam Houser, The Gamechangers chronicles development studio’s battles with the litigious (and since disbarred) Jack Thompson over video game violence. Hikers Get Swept Off WaterfallIf you've ever shrugged off a flash flood warning, this video's for you. While on vacation on the Hawaiian island of Maui last week, a group of hikers found themselves caught in a raging flash flood.... To make matters worse, a few of the hikers were climbing a waterfall at the time -- putting them in the worst possible place to face the onslaught of water. Watch as the water quickly overtakes one of the hikers, forcing him over the edge of the waterfall and into the pool below:  "There was no other option in my mind," Renee Lusano, one of the hikers, later wrote on her blog, "than that I had just seen our friend disappear and be killed, and there was nothing we could do about it."  Thankfully, Lusano's initial impression was wrong. Everyone in the group made it out safely -- and Lusano's...

A new study from Microsoft researchers warns that many types of databases used for electronic medical records are vulnerable to leaking information despite the use of encryption. The paper, due to be... presented at the ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security next month, shows how sensitive medical information on patients could be pilfered using four different attacks. Researchers discovered the sex, race, age and admission information, among other data, using real patient records from 200 U.S. hospitals. In the light of increasing cyberattacks against the health care industry, the researchers recommended that the systems they studied "should not be used in the context of" electronic medical records.

Naked Selfie By Sexting BoySelfies can be fatal – especially if you were to pose with a loaded gun. Well, thankfully this boy here shot a selfie that did not kill anyone, but it still got him into a whole lot of hot soup.... Apparently, he has been charged with a crime for having shot a naked selfie, sending it to a girl at school (whom he fancies, I suppose). This saw him being charged with the crime of making and distributing indecent images. The 14 year old boy was not arrested or charged, although his name might eventually end up on a police database for an entire decade. Not only that, this particular information might be disclosed to future employers, and I guess by that time he would be 24 at most – so it should not be too much of an issue if he were to explain himself, as he must've done so in the heat of a...

Staylittle Is One Remote UK Village

Ubergizmo - 4 Sep 2015 03:45
Staylittle Is One Remote UKWe more or less take our Internet connectivity for granted these days, and to live without any kind of connection can prove to be 'fatal' to the younger people (or so they think). Well, if you happen... to reside in the village of Staylittle, UK, then things would work very differently there. Apparently, this isolated village was ‘cut off’ from the rest of the UK the moment its phone lines went down. In fact, this village is so remote, it is eight miles away from the nearest market town, without any kind of mobile reception. Residents of Staylittle claimed that they were more or less isolated for two weeks, and this happened after there was a fault with their one and only communication line with the outside world. In fact, Staylittle is more than comfortable without having any kind of...

COTSbot Is The Terminator Of Starfish

Ubergizmo - 4 Sep 2015 03:33
COTSbot Is The Terminator OfCoral reefs are extremely beautiful to look at, but then again, they are also extremely sensitive to the kind of changes that they can experience through pollution, being decimated by careless... tourists, as well as through other underwater lifeforms – such as starfish. Well, it looks like the starfish problem might have a solution in the form of the COTSbot robot. The COTSbot robot will sport a vision system which has been specially designed to seek out starfish, and upon doing so, perform a lethal injection on those starfish. Once it has done its job of being the first responder to a particularly starfish infested area, human divers will then follow up that "genocide" by nicking off whatever survivors that there are behind. So far, field trials of the COTSbot have kicked off in Moreton...

Windows 10 Accounts For MoreIn terms of adoption, it looks like Microsoft has done something right with Windows 10 because according to the latest figures via NetMarketShare, it seems that Windows 10 is now accounting for more... than 5% of the desktop market. To be specific, Windows 10 at this time of writing holds a 5.21% market share. This is very impressive especially if you were consider that it was only last month that Windows 10 had 2.47% of the market. However we should note that these two stats were recorded by different companies so their data gathering might be a bit different, but overall it certainly does seem to indicate that Windows 10's adoption is on the rise. In fact the latest numbers have suggested that the number of Windows 10 installs has crossed the 75 million mark, a leap over the 53 million mark...

Gamechangers Broadcast To Go Ahead

Earlier this March, the BBC did share their plans with the rest of the world that they will be working on a Grand Theft Auto feature length drama, which obviously drew some ire from Rockstar, the... game's developer, as they subsequently sought to block such a move from happening. Rockstar had since decided to proceed with legal action against the BBC, citing that "our trademarks are not misused”. Such a legal issue has not been resolved to date, but the BBC has proceeded by revealing a trailer for the upcoming feature-length TV show known as The Gamechangers. This 90 minute drama will not be based on the Grand Theft Auto series, but rather, it will be a dramatized documentary that places its focus on the real-world controversy that happens to surround the games, and you can be sure that...

Rainbow Mika Can Off You In A Single Move

Ubergizmo - 4 Sep 2015 03:06
When it comes to video games, there are some titles which are broken – simply because there is a glitch or flaw that provides an unfair advantage to the person using it. For instance, in Capcom's... Marvel Superheroes arcade game, there is the infinity combo which will allow you to decimate your opponent without having a chance to fight back, although it will require the aggressive party to have perfect timing. In Street Fighter 5, pro wrestler Rainbow Mika might be the most popular combatant – not because of her physical make up, but her ability to deliver a one-hit knockout – or close to that. Of course, it is not enough to win a round with that one move alone, as you would need to hit your opponent with at least a heavy punch or kick before – or after the move. Sounds imbalanced,...

Sony Xperia T2 Ultra Dual GetsIt looks like the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update is starting to get more and more popular among different devices, where we saw it revealed for the vanilla Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime yesterday, and... here we are with word that the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra Dual too, would be on the receiving end of this particular update (having picked up the Android 4.4 update last year). The Sony Xperia T2 Ultra Dual is named in such a manner simply because it happens to be able to carry two SIM cards rather than one, and is an extension of the Xperia T2 Ultra. With the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update hitting the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra Dual, one can only make the logical conclusion that the single SIM model too, should be able to obtain this update since there should not be too much trouble at all for that to...

Chrome Gets Even Faster Now

Ubergizmo - 4 Sep 2015 02:16
Chrome is Google's web browser that is fast – at least in my user experience, that is, as opposed to the other browsers that are in the market. Well, this is because speed happens to be one of the... founding principles of Chrome. The most recent release of Chrome, in the form of Chrome 45, would see a bunch of improvements that intend to make your browsing experience make use of less memory and power. Another advantage of using Chrome would be to have the option to "continue where you left off" as it can restore tabs whenever you relaunch Chrome. This time around, Chrome wants to do that in a more efficient manner, as tabs are restored from most to least recently viewed, in order for you to check out the more important tabs in a jiffy. Sounds smart, but there are some people like me who...

Video reveals the secretQuentin Tarantino has made a bunch of movies in his life and it turns out they all take place within the same fictional universe. Screen Rant has put together a terrific video that looks at all the... subtle ways Tarantino’s movies are connected to one another, starting with the fact that Pulp Fiction character Vincent Vega is actually the brother of Reservoir Dogs character Mr. Blonde, the alias of a man named Vic Vega. MUST READ: Kid hilariously pranks his parents with a simple iPhone tweak But that’s not all: Tarantino often has characters in his movies watch other movies Tarantino has made, including Kill Bill and From Dusk Til Dawn; he has characters in multiple films order food from the fictional Big Kahuna Burger franchise; and he

A fittingly terrifying videoThe master of horror Wes Craven died at the age of 76 on Sunday, leaving behind a legendary directing career that included major franchises like Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream Over at... RogerEbert.com, Nelson Carvajal sought to create a video tribute that captured Craven's understanding of what makes humans tick. "The reason so many other horror filmmaker imitators come and go with little impression is because they forgot the basic landscape and vulnerability of the human condition," Carvajal wrote. "Craven pioneered this landscape for decades and it’s hard to imagine another filmmaker making any new headway in that territory anytime soon."

Apple Admits Apple Music StillWhile many have lauded Apple Music as being a potential rival to Spotify who has admittedly been in the streaming game much longer, a quick search on Google for problems related to Apple Music and you... will find many. Users are complaining of errors, connectivity issues, and also how their songs are being replaced with the wrong version. That being said if you're an Apple Music subscriber, fret not because according to Oliver Schusser, the VP of iTunes International, Apple is hard at work trying to fix all these issues. Schusser said, "The product is always our priority, and we are getting a lot of feedback. Remember, this was a very big launch in 110 markets instantly, so we get a ton of feedback. We're obviously trying to make it better every day." He also adds, "There's a lot of work...

Mysterious LG V10 Spotted In China's TENAA

Ubergizmo - 4 Sep 2015 01:45
Mysterious LG V10 Spotted InIn a recent post by Steve Hemmerstoffer (also known as @OnLeaks), he has discovered a mysterious LG device by the name of the V10 over in China's TENAA, which for those unfamiliar is basically China's... version of the FCC. The handset has a rather unique look and interestingly enough, it looks as though its front-facing camera has been embedded under the display itself. However in subsequent tweets by @evleaks, he has revealed that this will function similarly to the Samsung Continuum where it is sort of on a secondary display. We're not sure how it works but it does seem like an odd placement and we don't know why LG would choose such a weird spot to begin with. While the TENAA listing does to reveal the specs of the handset, @evleaks has posted some. According to his specs, the LG V10 will...

Google Street View Launched AsIf you're looking for directions to somewhere you're going, Google Maps is a great way to go about it. However what if that location has tons of shops and the one you're looking for isn't particularly... clear with its signage? That's when Google Street View comes in handy as you can check out the neighboring shops to get an idea of where it might be in relation to those shops. That being said, it seems that Google has decided that Street View has stopped being a novelty and has become useful enough to warrant its own app. Yup, if you enjoy using Street View, you might be interested to learn that Google has launched Street View as a standalone app where it more or less functions like how it normally does. However it should be noted that it is also more or less a rebranded and updated version...

Goodell's Long Fall

Facebook Giving AwayWe all know Facebook has primarily being a social network. However it seems that the company has other interests as well, and recently it was discovered that together with Summit Public Schools,... Facebook has developed an educational software called the Personalized Learning Plan. Best of all, it seems that Facebook wants to do their part for society by giving away the software to public schools who want to use it. Instead of students coming into class for lectures, the content of the class and its assignments are all posted online.
