Yahoo's claim ofYahoo has blamed its massive data breach on a "state-sponsored actor." But the company isn't saying why it arrived at that conclusion. Nor has it provided any evidence. The lingering questions are... causing some security experts to wonder why Yahoo isn't offering more details on a hack that stole account information from 500 million users. "I think there's a lot of fishiness going on here," said Michael Lipinski, the chief security strategist at Securonix. Yahoo didn't respond to a request for comment. The company has protocols in place that can detect state-sponsored hacking into user accounts. In a December 2015 blog post, the company outlined its policy, saying it will warn users when this is suspected.

UPS wants to use drones toOver the past few months, we've seen drones used for all sorts of bizarre endeavors. Whether it's a drone with an attached flamethrower roasting a turkey or a drone being used to deliver Chipotle... burritos to lucky college students, there's no denying that the world of the future will be filled with UAVs. That being the case, there's no reason why drones can't be used for the greater good in addition to being used for quirky activities. Putting this idea into practice, UPS recently began testing the idea of using drones as a means to deliver emergency medical supplies in areas where in-person delivery would either be impossible or would take too long. DON'T MISS: This is when you might find the iPhone 7 you want in Apple stores Recently, UPS had a drone test run off the coast of...

DJI Launches New Mavic ProDJI today announced the launch of the Mavic Pro, its latest and smallest drone. The DJI Mavic Pro is designed to be compact, folding down to be put in a bag so it can be used anywhere. Despite its small size, the Mavic Pro is equipped with a stabilized 12-megapixel camera capable of capturing 4K video at 30fps and FlightAutonomy visual navigation system, plus it features a 4.3 mile range and can be flown for 27 minutes before needing to be recharged. Honeywell introduced a new version of its Lyric smart thermostat at CES this year, and less than a year later it's already bringing us another iteration. The new Lyric T5 Wi-Fi thermostat is similar... to its CES brethren in that it's controlled through Honeywell's Lyric app, is compatible with Apple's HomeKit and Amazon's Alexa, can use your phone to set up a geofence, and will send you notifications when there are changes in humidity or temperature. So you'll be able to control the thermostat with your voice either through Alexa or Siri. The T5 will cost $149 when it's released in October, which is about $50 cheaper than the most recent Lyric smart thermostat. I have no idea why it's priced more affordably. Maybe because it's not as...

Behind D&D's Resurgence

Forbes - 27 Sep 2016 17:54
Behind D&D's ResurgenceDungeons & Dragons is an icon, a foundation from which so many video game developers, writers, film-makers and artists have built upon. Every child loves to daydream, but D&D gave me the tools to... dream bigger. In the 80's I read my Dungeon Master Guide, Monster Manual, and Tome of Magic over and over again, imagining worlds that could only exist in my mind. So, finding myself at the Wizards of the Coast headquarters in Renton, WA where D&D is developed felt like, in many ways going home again. D&D has been the gateway drug for so many artists that it was difficult not feeling like I was on hallowed ground. I spoke with Nathan Stewart (D&D Brand Director), Chris Perkins (Principal Story Designer) and Mike Mearls (Head of D&D Development) about why D&D is now seeing a resurgence in...

OneDrive's file placeholdersIt's official: OneDrive placeholders are coming back to Windows, but with a new name. Microsoft made the announcement on Monday during Ignite, the company's conference for IT professionals. The new... feature will be called On-Demand Sync when it comes to Windows 10. If you aren't familiar with the concept behind OneDrive placeholders (or On-Demand Sync), it's a feature that allows you to see all your OneDrive-stored files in the Windows File Explorer. Even if a file isn't stashed on your device's local hard drive it will still be visible when you open the OneDrive folder in File Explorer. If you open a file that isn't saved locally, OneDrive immediately downloads it from the cloud--at least in Windows 8.1.

Over the last year, the clearest trend in the drone industry has been a move toward units that are smaller and more portable. Yuneec introduced a drone with foldable arms, and last week GoPro did the... same. During its presentation for the new Karma drone, GoPro repeatedly emphasized how easy the unit was to slip into a backpack and bring anywhere. The Mavic Pro, DJI's latest offering, follows this same trend. Unveiled today, it is about half the size and weight of DJI's flagship unit, the Phantom. But it's much slimmer, because the props holding the rotors fold in over the body, making the whole profile small enough to fit into a backpack or even a purse. Hell I almost jammed it into the back pocket of some ordinary pants.

When restaurants ditch the dining room

The Verge - 27 Sep 2016 17:29
In a city where restaurants frequently blame closures on a brutal real estate market, a new solution has taken hold: Why not get rid of the dining room? Of course! If no one actually has to come to... your restaurant, all sorts of problems are no longer an issue. You don't need an attractive location, artistic ceramic bowls, quirky wallpaper in the bathroom, printed menus, service staff -- way less risk of failure. Just put up a website, and install a button that says "delivery

Swift CEO reveals three moreBanks stopped three new attempts to abuse the Swift financial transfer network this summer, its CEO Gottfried Leibbrandt said Monday, as he announced Swift's plan to impose tighter security controls... on its customers. Swift provides the network that banks use to exchange funds internationally, and hit the headlines in February when attackers almost got away with a billion-dollar heist at Bangladesh Bank. In the end, they only succeeded in stealing US$81 million after hacking bank systems connected to the Swift network. That prompted Swift to ratchet up security around its systems, which weren't themselves breached, updating the software it provides banks and adding new audit and verification tools.

Apple Edges Samsung to TopThe American Customer Satisfaction Index (ASCI) today released its latest results [PDF] on U.S. consumer satisfaction in the personal computer industry, including tablets, with Apple narrowly topping... the charts for the thirteenth consecutive year. Apple maintained its year-ago score of 84 out of 100 in the survey, consisting of interviews with 3,500 customers chosen at random and contacted via email in June to share their experiences with recently purchased products like Macs and iPads. Microsoft Azure networking isNetworking among virtual machines in Microsoft Azure is going to get a whole lot faster thanks to some new hardware that Microsoft has rolled out across its fleet of data centers. The company... announced Monday that it has deployed hundreds of thousands of FPGAs (Field-Programmable Gate Arrays) across servers in 15 countries and five different continents. The chips have been put to use in a variety of first-party Microsoft services, and they're now starting to accelerate networking on the company's Azure cloud platform. In addition to improving networking speeds, the FPGAs (which sit on custom, Microsoft-designed boards connected to Azure servers) can also be used to improve the speed of machine-learning tasks and other key cloud functionality. Microsoft hasn't said exactly what the contents...

Mira Nair's Queen of Katwe is a charming film based on the true story of Phiona Mutesi, a teenage prodigy whose chess skills got her out of the Ugandan slum where she grew up. But the movie ends with... a strange sort of show-and-tell. The real Mutesi, her friends, and her family come out for an on-screen bow. One by one, they walk out to stand next to the actors who play them, interacting in telling ways: Mutesi and actress Madina Nalwanga hug each other, while Mutesi's chess coach (Robert Katende) and the film's version of his character (David Olweyo) both give the camera the same solemn stare-down. Katwe's ending is stagy and artificial, but at least it's creative. Usually, films based in reality end with a text crawl adding some...

After months of rumors, BMW has officially confirmed that it is partnering with the Andretti Formula E team. The German car manufacturer made the announcement earlier today as part of a larger... restructuring of its motorsports program. The partnership will last for two seasons, and at the end of it BMW says it will evaluate the possibility of fully running its own team in the all-electric racing series. FAQ: What's so special aboutHere are the broad strokes about 802.11ad, the wireless technology that's just starting to hit the market. 802.11ac, 802.11ac wave 2, 802.11omg! Could we maybe get some different names for this stuff?... No! Next question! May the power of the IEEE smite you down for heresy! Fine, fine. So 802.11ad - what's the deal here? Well, now that you're being civil, I'll tell you - 802.11ad is, yes, a new wireless standard that uses the 60GHz spectrum instead of the 5GHz and 2.4GHz used by most Wi-Fi connections today. It boasts a theoretical max speed of 7Gbps, vs 3.2Gbps for 802.11ac Wave 2. So you're saying it has more gigahertz? Why should I care about that?

Here are a few specs that mean nothing to most, but might matter to you when you're shopping for the best-specced gaming mouse on the planet: 16,000 DPI, 450 IPS, and 50G acceleration. Add those... together and you get the DeathAdder Elite, which Razer claims is the "fastest, most sensitive and most accurate gaming mouse available today." Tall claims! There are already a few computer mice in existence with 16,000 DPI (dots per inch, a measure of the fine-grained movements the mouse can detect) optical sensors, but Razer has also boosted the IPS (inches per second, how far you can move in a second without the mouse "skipping") to 450, and the mouse also can handle a 50G acceleration. (Fun fact: 46.2G is the maximum acceleration a human...

Razer's DeathAdder EliteChances are at least one of you reading this has a Razer DeathAdder. It's been one of the most popular gaming mouses ever since its initial release in 2006, in part because it's a no-frills option... that "just works," to borrow a phrase from Apple. The DeathAdder is, as I said in our review last year, the vanilla milkshake of gaming mouses--classic scooped shape, two oversized thumb buttons, scroll wheel. This is as simple as it gets. But for its tenth birthday the DeathAdder's receiving some under-the-hood work, contained in the new DeathAdder Elite. Of note: This is a full-on replacement for the previous DeathAdder Chroma model, not a high-end model.

Target's chief digital officer is out four months after his promotion. In May, Target Chief Digital Officer Jason Goldberger was seated on a stage at Recode's inaugural Code Commerce event talking... about his promotion that had been announced that day. But just four months later, Target has eliminated Goldberger's job and split his duties between two other executives. In a statement, Target CEO Brian Cornell tried explaining the move with a buzzword gumbo of "accountability," "speed up decision making," "new direction" and "advance our efforts." What the shake-up really comes down to, though, is simple: A panicked decision driven consciously or unconsciously by the realization that nothing Target has done has slowed Amazon from eating up more and more market share in North America. New Galaxy Note 7 sales begin October 28 in Europe

Android Central - 27 Sep 2016 16:31
New Galaxy Note 7 sales beginNew release is almost two months after the original street date, as Samsung announces 57% of old Note 7s have been returned. Samsung has today announced that new Galaxy Note 7 sales will recommence... from October 28, after battery safety problems scuppered the original launch date of September 2. The company says the new date is "subject to a full completion of the exchange program" -- so all (or at least the overwhelming majority) of old, potentially dangerous Notes need to be returned before new sales can begin. In a press release, Samsung also revealed that in Europe, 57% of Note 7 customers have exchanged their phone in the week since the exchange program began. Of those people exchanging, 90% chose a new Note 7 and 3% chose an alternative Samsung phone, the company says. (That leaves 7%...

Using robots to make shoes means moving factories closer to the people who buy them. Adidas's robotic shoe manufacturing plant in Germany is now up and running. The athletic footwear giant shared its... first shoe made almost entirely by robots late last week, building on the company's long-term plan to add robot-staffed, custom shoemaking factories, dubbed Speed Factories, to its global supply chain. No discovery here, which will probably suit you just fine. Spotify has figured out how to use software to bring you music you haven't heard that you might like. Now it's bringing you music it knows... you like. The streaming music service is rolling out "Daily Mixes," a feature that provides up to six daily (duh) playlists composed only of music you've played before. It's a riff on "Discover Weekly" and "Release Radar" -- two Spotify playlists that mix stuff you like with stuff other people like. All of these auto-generated playlists are trying to solve the same problem -- in an on-demand world, where you have 30 million tracks to choose from and a limited amount of time, how do you find things you'd like to hear? Or, put more crassly: How can Spotify get you stick around, and/or pay up? When...

And the story itself is pretty wonderful.* I'm not sure I can write it better than the press release did: The foundational study was designed to validate the effectiveness of a 3D printed model kidney used in the research, led by a Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine professor of urology. Let's talk about the Pixel'sAndroid's on-screen buttons get a big overhaul as part of the new Google UI on the Pixel phones. So let's take a look at what's new, and revisit what's come before. So the first proper render of one... of the new Google Pixel phones has leaked out, and with it we're getting a look at some new UI tweaks in that device's software. The Pixel phones put the Google brand front and center, and so we're seeing some significant UI tweaks -- not least of which is in Android's soft keys. The new key layout uses a solid triangle, circle and square for the three main Android keys, with the home key having a white border around it. Video: Photokina 2016 wrap-up

DP Review - 27 Sep 2016 14:00
Photokina is without question the biggest photography show in the world, and as such, the venue at which manufacturers routinely showcase their biggest and most exciting releases. We were on the... ground in Cologne, Germany before the show even began to bring you the most in-depth content we could write on the most important innovations we could find. But now that Photokina has come and gone, we've had some time to reminisce over everything we saw in and among the development announcements, tech briefings and even just while wandering the halls of the Koelnmesse. So in case you just can't get enough of Photokina content, come join Richard Butler, Barney Britton, and even cameraman Carey Rose for a few pints and a few thoughts on how this year's show went. Interferometers have myriad uses, from detecting gravitational waves to teasing apart the interactions of molecules within our bodies. The instruments make such minute measurements by manipulating... beams of light using an optical delay--an effect that's typically achieved by adding length to one of the beam's path, which slows the signal down. The development opens up new ways of analyzing light beams in space instead of time. Now, a team of research teams from the University of Central Florida, Florida, USA and the University of Rochester, New York, USA have found a way to introduce a delay that's unrelated to time.

Naked Mike Rowe Pulls ShotgunDon’t go peeping on Mike Rowe with a drone. The TV personality says he almost blasted an intrusive quadcopter out of the sky, after he spotted it hovering over his San Francisco home while he was... in his birthday suit last Tuesday. The former “Dirty Jobs” host was sleeping nude in his bedroom when the sound of what he thought was a gigantic bumble bee woke him up, he wrote on Facebook. Only it wasn’t an insect that roused him from his slumber. He opened the drapes and was shocked to see a drone buzzing in the air just feet away from his window — with its camera pointed straight at him. Rowe, 54, grabbed his 12-gauge shotgun from under his bed and ran down to his deck, still in the buff. “I pumped a shell into the chamber, enjoying the ‘crunch-crunch’ sound that makes...

Halt WhatsApp data transfers,Facebook must stop collecting information about WhatsApp users in Germany, a local privacy watchdog has ordered. Last month, Facebook began combining user data from WhatsApp, the messaging company it... acquired in 2014, with the mountain of information it holds about members of its social network in order to better target advertising. Privacy regulators were also concerned, among them the Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, who on Tuesday issued an administrative order prohibiting Facebook from collecting and storing the data of German WhatsApp users. Shape-programmable miniscule robots

Phys.org - 27 Sep 2016 12:33
Shape-programmable minisculeOne day, microrobots may be able to swim through the human body like sperm or paramecia to carry out medical functions in specific locations. Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent... Systems in Stuttgart have developed functional elastomers, which can be activated by magnetic fields to imitate the swimming gaits of natural flagella, cilia and jellyfish. Using a specially developed computer algorithm, the researchers can now automatically generate the optimal magnetic conditions for each gait for the first time. According to the Stuttgart-based scientists, other applications for this shape-programming technology include numerous other micro-scale engineering applications, in which chemical and physical processes are implemented on a miniscule scale.

Forza Horizon 3 review: TheThe opening guitar chords of Rancid's "Fall Back Down" start pumping through the stereo as I take a corner at 100-plus miles per hour, tires squealing while my back end crashes through some scrub... brush and kicks up red dirt. More than 60 percent of defective Galaxy Note 7 smartphones sold in the United States and South Korea have now been returned and exchanged for new models, Samsung has claimed. In other words, 40... percent of the dangerous devices are still in consumer hands, almost four weeks after Samsung issued a global recall on the Note 7. "A Big One" the Half Billion Users Cyber Hack of Yahoo

The Huffington Post - 27 Sep 2016 03:06
'A Big One' the Half BillionWhile it's not a surprise to hear that this order of magnitude of users have been corporate hacked, the rise of the digital business means everyone is more or less online these days. What is shocking... is the date , 2014 and the sense of resignation that some may have to the event. This is far too late for professional cyber security risk management that should have organisational practices inside Yahoo one would expect . This other is what is the legal impact for Yahoo from the reputational impact and liability in losses for customers could yet be significant and a headache for Verizon's its planned imminent takeover of Yahoo. The lateness of the attack discovery, a whole 2 years, and the indication that it was a government state-sponsored attack suggests both a highly professional stealth...

Fishing in the dead pool

TechCrunch - 27 Sep 2016 03:00
Fishing in the dead pool I have used my free time this summer revisiting a childhood passion: fishing. My father loved to fish. He would take me to Central Park’s Ramble and Lake with a hook and lure. I would inevitably... catch something very small, put it in a cup and hope it would survive overnight to show my friends. As I grew older, we graduated to fishing boats launching from City Island and Sheepshead Bay.…

GE, Bosch and open sourcePartnerships that could shape the internet of things for years are being forged just as enterprises fit IoT into their long-term plans. A majority of organizations have included IoT as part of their... strategic plans for the next two to three years, IDC said last week. No one vendor can meet the diverse IoT needs of all those users, so they're joining forces and also trying to foster broader ecosystems. General Electric and Germany's Bosch did both on Monday. The two companies, both big players in industrial IoT, said they will establish a core IoT software stack based on open-source software. They plan to integrate parts of GE's Predix operating system with the Bosch IoT Suite in ways that will make complementary software services from each available on the other.

Could Europa be Spewing Signs of Life?

Physics Buzz - 27 Sep 2016 02:44
In an eagerly anticipated announcement, NASA just revealed new evidence that plumes of water are intermittently expelled from the surface of Europa, one of Jupiter's moons. It's not quite as exciting... as finding little green men skating across Europa's ice-covered surface, but it could be a step in that direction. If alien life exists in our solar system, we'll probably find it on Europa. Miles beneath its icy surface there is a liquid, saltwater ocean that could harbor life. If that's the case, and if water sometimes spews out through the ice, that means we can study the water and look for signs of life without drilling through an unknown number of miles of ice to reach the ocean. The puzzling, fascinating surface of Jupiter's icy moon Europa, made from images taken by NASA's Galileo...

We're just one week away from the unveiling of Google's newest smartphones and VentureBeat has got its hands on a clear image of one of the gadgets.
