Google Cloud Storage -- a non-consumer service used by companies like Ubisoft, Rovio, Best Buy, and others for storing content-- will for the first time automatically encrypt its users' data. The move... is intended to protect, companies developers, and ultimately your data from prying eyes, utilizing the128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). Under the new system, data will be encrypted on Google's end "before it's written to disk." Google tells us that the keys to unlock this encryption are managed using the same systems Google uses for its data. User data and metadata is encrypted using a unique key, which is then encrypted using a second key associated with the data owner, which is in turn encrypted using a "regularly rotated"...
Unlock your phone via NFC with a tap on this wearable accessory. Motorola has just put up an odd Moto X accessory for sale called the "Skip" which unlocks your Moto X when you take it out of your... pocket. The "wearable accessory" clips onto your shirt or pants near where you keep your Moto X in your pocket, and unlocks the device via NFC when you swipe past it. Yup, that's all it does and Motorola is asking $20 for this accessory to boot. A support document showing setup and troubleshooting information for the Skip indicates that it's simple to set up by tapping your Moto X to it once and following the settings prompts. But we're still unsure how this is any notable amount faster to unlock your phone than pulling it out and hitting the power button with your thumb. Presumably you'll have to...
Categories: Equipment News Rumors Tags: leakedlenscameralenscamerasmanualownersmanualqxsonysonyqx Earlier this week, we got a close look at how Sony's upcoming "lens cameras" will look, thanks to a... set of leaked press photos, and now we have a better idea of how they'll work, thanks to some leaked owner's manual pages. We have been hearing rumors that Sony could be looking to launch a lens camera accessory for iOS devices, which essentially is a lens that one could attach to their smartphone to boost its photography... abilities. We've seen alleged photos of the accessory and in case you weren't convinced yet, diagrams of the QX10 and QX100 have made their way online and assuming these are indeed diagrams from the user manual, they certainly do match up with the leaked images we've seen earlier. For those wondering what's the difference between either accessory, the QX100 is expected to feature the same RX100MII sensor and the same Zeiss lens, while the QX10 will sport the same 1/2.3" 18MP CMOS sensor and f/3.3-5.9 lens as the WX150. The numbers pointing at the different parts of the lenses indicate the...

There are a lot of electronic devices we use in our daily lives that we might not really need. We think we "need" them, when actually in reality we only "want" them. To that extent an artist, who... refers to himself as Plastic Jesus, played a prank on Best Buy customers by placing a black plastic box complete with a description in the electronics section of the retailer, placing it alongside gadgets such as GPS navigation systems and tablets. The box itself is pretty plain and just black all, so upon first glance you might be hard pressed to figure out just what it is. However for the more observant Best Buy shopper, upon closer inspection of the product's description, it reads, "Another gadget you don't really need", and "New model out in 4 weeks", along with a price tag of $99.99. The...

When, at the end of July, Bradley Manning was found guilty of nearly all the charges facing him, his long-running story entered a new chapter. With his guilt established, the trial turned to the... matter of his punishment. He faces a potential 90 years in prison, and the judge, Army Colonel Denise Lind, holds his fate in her hands. She will consider the consequences of Manning's actions and the circumstances surrounding them. The deeper question Lind will also consider, though, is: who was Bradley Manning then, and who is he now? He was arrested in May 2010 while still stationed in Iraq, suspected of leaking some 700,000 government documents, including reports detailing day-to-day military activities in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well...

The NSA insists that it respects American privacy, but documents leaked by Edward Snowden to the Washington Post suggest that the agency has trouble maintaining that respect. A May 2012 audit, buried... in the documents, 2,776 incidents where the NSA's Washington-area facilities inadvertently obtained protected American data through a mix of human errors and technical limits. Among its larger gaffes, the NSA regularly had problems determining when foreign cellphones were roaming in the US, leading to unintentional snooping on domestic calls. The agency also spent months tapping and temporarily storing a mix of international and domestic data from US fiber lines until the Foreign Intelligence Surveilliance Court ruled that the technique was unconstitutional. NSA officials responding to the...
Death by car is random and sudden--which, unfortunately, means it tends to fall into the category of "accidental," and hence, unpreventable. But with traffic deaths set to outpace AIDS/HIV and malaria... in the developing world, the UN is trying to change that perception--and this shocking interactive map ought to help.

Back in 2012, Capcom announced Resident Evil 6 and while the game was anticipated by many due to the popularity of the Resident Evil franchise, reviews of the game were somewhat mixed and some were... wondering if Capcom would be able to do better with Resident Evil 7. While that remains to be seen, Capcom has acknowledged that they did drop the ball somewhat with the game and agreed with some critics that the game felt a bit too "bloated" as the developer had tried to put too much content in the game, which isn't a bad thing, but we guess it did not turn out the way they had expected. Speaking to MCV, former Capcom marketing boss Michael Pattison was quoted as saying, "With Resident Evil 6 specifically, we probably put too much content in there, there were comments from consumers that said...

After almost sixty years, and a ridiculously high number of pop culture references, the CIA has finally confirmed that Area 51 is real. As The Atlantic Wire reports, the revelation comes from a... recently declassified document that details the site. The 407-page paper explores the discovery, research, and development of the government base, which was popularized the world over as the home of secret alien-focused research by the The X-Files and Independence Day. Of course, the CIA document doesn't refer to aliens at all. Instead, it acknowledges Area 51 as the base for the government's U-2 spy plane program. The site was used in World War II as an "aerial gunnery range" for the Army Air Corps, and already had a non-paved airstrip. An...
$10,311,220. It isn't sufficient to greenlight Canonical's innovative hybrid smartphone, but it is just enough to beat the sum raised by the Pebble smartwatch and thereby steal the crowdfunding... record. Well, sort of, at least. It depends on whether the amount pledged is all that matters, regardless of whether the project actually comes to fruition -- as happened with both the Pebble on Kickstarter and Indiegogo's previous record holder, the Scanadu Scout. More importantly though, Ubuntu Edge may have reached the point where it'll have a second chance even if it doesn't achieve the required backing of $32 million: Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth told the BBC that some manufacturers have noticed all the hubbub and have come "out of the woodwork" to discuss taking the Android / Ubuntu...
