I thought I was a shoo-in. Years ago, I'd interviewed with a friend for a sales position. Paul and I went way back. He'd recruited me away from another company. And we worked together for nearly a decade. After he left, I served as a reference - and gave his current boss a glowing recommendation. Paul had always told me how much he admired me. In my mind, this interview was just a formality.
