In 1999, we entered what would eventually be known as the smartphone era. I bought my first Blackberry device from a company called Research In Motion (RIM).  This PDA (personal digital assistant) device, which was nothing more than a pager with email capabilities, would soon become one of the first if not smart, then at least semi-intelligent phones.  For me, it was the most innovative thing around - I had to have it on my belt, right next to my Motorola flip phone.
