Wednesday's launch of the 35th annual Forbes 100 Best Small Companies list introduced more than 25 newcomers, from snack foods to 3D printers, but what struck us the most was a counterintuitive trend: while technology companies featured heavily this year, nearly one third of the top-performing companies by revenue and track record are more brick-and-mortar than microchips and cloud processing. The top 20 non-tech companies this year pulled in combined sales topping $9 billion.
