(ETH Zurich) Until recently, how supervolcanos become active remained a mystery. Geologists from ETH Zurich have now used synchrotron X-rays to demonstrate that the pressure generated through the difference in density between magma and the surrounding rock alone can be sufficient to cause one of these geological giants to erupt.
