Last Saturday night, the place to be for a spirited live show wasn't a new club on U Street; it was the Washington Performing Arts's annual gala. The event, which had a South African theme, was held on the 20th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's inauguration as president and featured South African singer-songwriter Vusi Mahlasela, who was flown in to perform for the organization's 550 patrons at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel.
