The documentary "The Battered Bastards of Baseball" premieres first thing Friday on Netflix to tell the history behind Hollywood actor Bing Russell's purchase of the minor league territory rights in Portland, Ore., in 1973 and how he formed a Class A team of "quirky, unkempt misfits" to operate outside Major League Baseball as the rebellious Portland Mavericks.
