Condé Nast Hired Dorothy Parker 100 Years Ago Vogue added Dorothy Parker to its staff in 1915. Dorothy Rothschild was 21 and living on the Upper West Side of Manhattan when she mailed a letter that changed her life. It happened 100 years ago, sometime in early 1915. The moment set the scene for her to become Dorothy Parker. The letter she placed in the mailbox contained a 36-line poem. Nine quatrains in a precisely formed rhyme scheme of A-B-A-B. "Any Porch" begins: "I'm reading that new thing of Locke's -- So whimsical, isn't he? Yes -- " ...
