The issues identified by McKinsey are hardly unknown or unstudied in Japan. In fact, they have been the subjects of constant study and debate and elucidation, not just in academia, but in business groups, like Keidanren and Keizai Doyukai, in successive government Cabinets, in the concerned central ministries, in the Diet and in local councils, and, of course, within corporations, large and small.
