On Mother's Day 2011, photographer B.D. Colen got an unexpected call from his college best friend, Rev. Bill Potter. Potter, a 62-year-old Episcopal clergyman and a heavy smoker who had spent months volunteering at Ground Zero, was dying of lung cancer. A few weeks later, Colen, who teaches documentary photography at MIT, traveled to visit Potter at a hospice in New Hampshire. It was clear when he arrived that Potter didn't have much time left.
