Carolyn L. Sherer began photographing lesbians and their families in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2011. Still one year before President Barack Obama even announced his support for same-sex marriage, the risks for these queers in the south -- which could (and still can) range from intimidation to physical violence -- were high.
