On Jan. 20, 1961, I played the bass drum in JFK's inaugural parade with the Sherwood High School band from Sandy Spring, Md. Our band leader, Bruno Laakko, chose to start our march past the reviewing stand with "Ruffles and Flourishes," the fanfare that is traditionally followed by "Hail to the Chief." Instead, Mr. Laakko followed "Ruffles and Flourishes" with "Harvardiana," the march song of Kennedy's alma mater, Harvard. Band members who broke parade discipline to sneak a glance at the preside...
