Ethnic Chinese family-led businesses such as Sun Hung Kai Properties and Henderson Land in Hong Kong and are often held up as icons of Asia’s post-World War II economic success. Yet research shows that family companies with a Chinese background also tend to have a shorter lifespan than others around the world, owing to a distrust of outsiders and a sojourner mentality, among other weaknesses. How can Chinese family businesses improve their chances of survival?
