The sexual assault charges against Jian Ghomeshi, a once beloved icon of Canadian broadcasting, were always going to be hard to prove. The alleged incidents happened years ago, and prosecutors had no physical evidence or first-hand witnesses to bring forward in the sensational eight-day trial in Toronto. Even one of the unnamed women who had accused Ghomeshi told the Canadian magazine Chatelaine that she "never thought he would be convicted."
