(Medical University of South Carolina) Medical University of South Carolina researchers investigated the effects of mutations altering the structure of an essential protein in an antibiotic-resistant strain of Neisseria gonorrhoeae. They report in the Journal of Biological Chemistry that the mutations do not simply block antibiotics from binding to the protein but lock the protein in a shape that reduces its ability to interact with drugs.
