ICE is rounding up green card holders

The Week - 28 Jun 2018 19:05
ICE is rounding up green cardDeportation isn't just for undocumented criminals, as President Trump has suggested. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has set its sights on lawful permanent residents who have committed minor... crimes, some more than 20 years ago, the Los Angeles Times reports. These immigrants have green cards, but 15 were still scooped up in a three-day ICE raid on "public safety threats" in the Los Angeles area. The 62-year-old grandfather left Mexico when he was 13 and earned legal status in 1988. Trump says he must pick aDuring a rally in Fargo, North Dakota, on Wednesday night, President Trump said he wants to choose a Supreme Court justice to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy "that's going to be there for 40... years, 45 years." Kennedy is a "very special guy," Trump added, and he revealed he feels "very honored" that Kennedy is retiring now because it means he "felt confident in me." The next justice must be "a great one," he said, before imploring the crowd to "elect more Republicans." It wouldn't be a Trump rally without the president insulting people, and he called Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.), the 10-term congressman who lost the Democratic primary to newcomer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Tuesday night, a "slovenly man" who "got his ass kicked." As for "the elite," they are "stone-cold losers," and...

Nancy Pelosi debutsThe Democratic Party was dealt a massive blow Wednesday when the Supreme Court ruled on a pivotal union fees case, effectively sticking a knife in "the one remaining bastion of the American labor... movement." But anyone worried about public unions, or future conservative court rulings, can rest assured: House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is here, and she has a witty nickname that is going to solve everything. Addressing the Supreme Court's union fees decision Thursday, Pelosi said: "The Supreme Court became the Supreme Corp." In case you didn't catch that, she explained: "That's in short for 'corporation.' They are handmaidens of corporate America." Alas, cute nicknames might not be quite the "tooth and nail" tactics that some Democrats were hoping for. House Minority Leader...

A minimum-wage worker inFive million Venezuelan bolivars is the equivalent of $1.45. It's also roughly a minimum-wage worker's entire monthly salary in the South American country. Thanks to stunning inflation, it now takes 1... million bolivars to buy a cup of coffee in a Venezuelan cafe, Bloomberg reports. That's one-fifth of Venezuela's monthly minimum wage, and 10,000-bill stack of Venezuela's most common bank note, the 100-bolivar bill. To illustrate Venezuela's rampant inflation, Bloomberg has tracked the price of a cup of coffee since December 2016 on its Cafe Con Leche index. One dose of caffeine cost 450 bolivars when the index launchedtwo years ago, but 43,378 percent inflation in the last year has led to today's astronomical price. Incredibly bleak moment milestone for Venezuela. The cost of one cup of...
