Peshmerga forces unleash fire power against Islamic State just southwest of the Iraqi city of Kirkuk. IS has frequently battled Iraqi security forces and Shi'ite militias further south and west, but attacks in and around Kurdish-controlled Kirkuk have been less frequent. Kurdish military sources say the peshmerga repelled several dawn attacks by Islamic State. A senior Kurdish official posted on Twitter that 45 militants and seven Kurdish "martyrs" were killed around Kirkuk.
