For almost six years, Zhang Ligang devoted himself to China’s burgeoning Internet sector. The 44-year-old graduate of Harvard’s medical school ditched his pursuit of a Ph.D in genetics to join Sohu, one of the country’s largest Internet portals, in 1998, when the Web business was just taking off there. He left after one year to found eLong, a flight- and hotel-booking website now listed on the Nasdaq. But he didn’t stay at eLong for long.
