Pentagon acquisition chief Frank Kendall has been complaining of late that the ranks of military contractors are becoming too concentrated, potentially stifling innovation. However, there isn't much evidence to suggest that sheer bigness gets in the way of developing cutting-edge technology, and even the largest defense company (Lockheed Martin) only claims about 6% of U.S. military spending -- with most of the money passed through to subcontractors.
