Gig companies, riding a policy win in California, get another boost from a new federal labor rule

A move by the U.S. Labor Department will make it easier for businesses to classify their workers as independent contractors, a boon to gig-economy companies which, in California, have already successfully pushed back against state regulations on contract work. Labor advocates say it's a step back for worker protections.
