Pope Benedict XVI, the bookish conservative pillar of the Roman Catholic Church who ended his turbulent tenure in 2013 by becoming the first pontiff to retire in six centuries, died at 9:34 a.m. local time in his residence at the Vatican's Mater Ecclesiae Monastery. He was 95.
